[karachi-Friends] Tax the rich – stop the cuts!

Incidentally that is what Quran says. " Let not your wealth circulate among your rich alone! "

Tax the rich - stop the cuts!

Dear Javed,

We can stop the cuts to public services and fight global poverty at the same time.

Sounds like a pretty tall order, doesn't it? Yet there's an answer to both problems: tax justice.

The global tax system is broken. The central principle of progressive taxation – the more you earn the more you can afford to pay – has been beaten down over the last few decades, so now some of the richest people in society pay a lower proportion of their income in tax than some of the poorest.

One of the key ways this is done is using tax havens such as Jersey or the Cayman Islands, which allow rich individuals and multinational corporations to escape paying their fair share to the exchequer. The UK loses around £18 billion to tax havens each year, while poor countries lose up to ten times that much.

That means if we can fix the tax system, we could avoid deep spending cuts in the UK and take a giant step towards a world without extreme poverty.

A new report just launched by War on Want, the trade union PCS and the Tax Justice Network details just how to do that. The report recommends a number of measures that would begin to unwind the complex and highly profitable tax dodging industry.

Find out more about our tax campaign and download the report.

The UK government could implement many of these measures if it had the political will; and it could be working far harder to secure agreement on the others at the global and European levels.

War on Want is working closely with PCS, experts at the Tax Justice Network and UK Uncut activists to make sure the government puts an end to the scandal of tax havens.

Things are gearing up for a summer of discontent, with protests by unions, occupations by activists and an anti-tax havens Bill in Parliament, all in the run up to the G20 in November where governments have promised to act to avoid another financial meltdown.

You'll find more info on our website in the coming weeks, but in the meantime get prepared by having a look at the new report or executive summary on our website.

With very best wishes
