[PF:169239] Guess which country is this? It does not know about its own citizen!

Following is my comment posted to TCN's news item [Fasih: Interpol issues Red Corner Notice]

Raise your voice dear brothers and sisters, otherwise YOU may be the next to be sought through Interpol

We just read the news item about Mr. Chidambaram saying that India has nothing to do with Fasih Mahmood's arrest in Saudi. But this interpol notice is from India.
Indian embassy in Riyadh does not know the status of this Fasih Mahmood picked by Saudi Police on the request of Indian government. And, this may be the only embassy of the world which is not even interested in knowing the status of its citizen. Numerous requests made by Fasih Mahmood's family members, and by social groups to this embassy fell on deaf ears - it has not even tried to find out Fasih ... it says, it has no information at all ...! What an embassy which does not even try to know the whereabouts of its own citizen!
Guess which country is this!!
Mr. Chidambaram, and Mr. Ambassador, pls relinquish your chairs, pls don't put India to shame!! Pls don't put a billion people to shame!
Day-in and day-out, you are the people who tell us we must work hard to take India forward towards super-stardom.
For what?
For people like you to put India and its billion people to shame before the world?!

Fasih: Interpol issues Red Corner Notice

By TCN News,

New Delhi: His name is Fasih Mehmood. He is 28 years old. His height is 1.7 meter. Colour of hair and eyes is black. He is wanted by India for various offences including Terrorism, Crimes involving the use of weapons/explosives. If you have any information about this person please contact your local or national police.

Interpol on Thursday issued Red Corner Notice to arrest Fasih Mehmood and put these details on its website.

However, his family and media reports say the man has been detained by Saudi Police on the request of Indian authorities well 17 days ago. Only Wednesday, the Supreme Court of India issued notice to central government and four state governments to produce Fasih while hearing his wife Nikhat Perween's habeas corpus petition. The apex court has sought response by Friday noon (tomorrow).

Fasih belongs to Barasamela village in Darbhanga of Bihar. Four from his village and a dozen youths from his district have been picked in last six months in different terror cases.

Fasih Mehmood not in India's custody: Chidambaram

Submitted by admin4 on 31 May 2012 - 8:52pm

By IANS,

New Delhi : The central government Thursday denied media reports that Fasih Mehmood, an Indian engineer working in Saudi Arabia, was in its custody.

"The media reports are wrong... he is not in the custody of Indian intelligence agencies... the police of Delhi and Karnataka want the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) to approach the Interpol to locate him," Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram told reporters here.

He said Mehmood could be in Saudi Arabia.

The Supreme Court had Tuesday issued notice to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of External Affairs regarding the disappearance of Mehmood.

He was allegedly picked up by the members of the National Investigative Agency on May 13 and is missing ever since.

Mehmood's wife, Nikhat Parveen, had approached the apex court.

Media reports said Mehmood was deported to India on alleged terror charges but he never reached India

{Islamic Mailing Group} In the belly of the whale.

Have you ever felt as though things are just too much for you, that you are in a situation you see no way of getting out of? Do you look at problems in our world today and wonder how they can ever be solved? All this, and more, is the story of Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him). The mission of Prophet Yunus is a timeless story that tells us there is a way out, if only we have faith.

Almighty Allah called Yunus to preach to the people of Nineveh. Nineveh was a great city, the capital of Assyria, and it had become a very wicked place. Yunus went to the people there and told them to give up their bad ways and to turn, instead, to Allah. But they wouldn't listen to him and so Yunus left them, calling down Allah's wrath on them. His preaching failed, so he stormed off. This is the first very human touch in the story of Yunus. Even though he was a prophet, Yunus was still a man and he stormed off out of the city when he didn't get what he wanted. He even felt that he knew what Allah should do to these people, calling on Allah to punish them. We can identify with Yunus here, can't we? On a human level, we often give up too soon, and we often march off when we don't get what we want. On a spiritual level, we see lots of wickedness in the world and think we know how the evil-doers should be treated. Some people even take it upon themselves to punish them.

Having left the city behind, Yunus boards a ship. He has had enough of preaching Allah's message and he sets sail far away from the scene of his failure. Once at sea, though, a storm grows up and the crew are terrified. These pagan sailors feel that the gods of the sea must be displeased with them, so they draw lots to throw one man overboard to calm the storm. Yunus draws the short straw, not once but three times, and the terrified crew throw him overboard to protect themselves and their ship.

Once in the water, something extraordinary happens. Allah sends a great fish, some describe it as a whale, to swallow Yunus whole. Once in its belly, Yunus descends to the bottom of the sea, filled with total despair. How can he possibly survive this disaster? What way out of his situation could there possibly be? He is engulfed by darkness: the darkness of the deep; the darkness of the creature's stomach; and, worst of all, the darkness of despair. Even though he was a religious man, called to be a prophet, he experiences doubt and despair, and it is when he is in the depths of despair that things change for him. In the Holy Qur'an, we read that Yunus "cried through the darkness." He realized that Almighty Allah, not he, was in control of things. He cries out, "there is no god but you," and asks for help. In asking for help, his prayer is heard.

There is a very beautiful book, called Stories of the Prophets, written in the Middle Ages by Hafez Ibn Kathir. It is easily available and well worth reading. In it, Ibn Kathir has a lovely commentary on this part of Yunus' story. He says that once Yunus admits that there is no god but Allah and that only Allah can save him, something wonderful happens. First, the whale begins to sing the praises of Allah, then all the little fishes around it, then all the creatures of the sea, each in its own way, until there is a great chorus of praise. The whale swims up to the surface and ejects Yunus onto the shore. Just as Allah had used it to save Yunus from the storm and from drowning in the sea, so He also uses it to bring Yunus safely to land again.

And there is more. Yunus is feeling sick and sore as he lies on the sand in the scorching heat, still not knowing what will become of him. Allah takes even more care of him and causes a plant to grow up over him and to cover Yunus with its shade. Once he has recovered from his ordeal and his skin has stopped smarting from the acids in the creatures stomach, he decides to return to Nineveh, his travels over, and to see what has become of the city and its people. When he arrives there, to his great surprise he sees that the city and its people have not been destroyed, but have all turned to Allah. His message had got through to them. Perhaps when they saw the terrible storm as it grew up in the distance, they saw in it an image of what would happen to them if they did not repent. Who knows why they turned back to Allah, but they did. Yunus, then, after all his adventures, is finally content that his mission has been accomplished.

There is so much that the story of Yunus can teach us. First of all, read it yourself in the Holy Qur'an. You will find it in the following places: 4:163;  6:86;  10:98;  21:87;  37:139-148; and 68:48-50. Ponder over the meaning of the words and listen to what they say to you. Yunus' story is timeless. It is for the whole world and it is for each one of us.

Nineveh, for example, the great city and the capital of a great empire, doesn't even exist anymore. Scholars say it lies in Iraq on the other side of the river from the city of Mosul, but its temples and monuments have gone. All worldly power will go the same way. Even today's superpowers, who behave as though they are Allah, and believe that everyone just obey them, will one day wither and fade and, like all great empires before them, cease to exist. Remember, Allah is in control, not this country or that. Allah will decide the course of events.

Another lesson from the story of Prophet Yunus (pbuh) is that we never know the effect our deeds will have on others. We, like Yunus, are called to tell others about Islam, but the results might never be known to us. A word we say to one person might touch them deeply and yet we may never see the effect of that world. But we must keep trying. We never know what effect our da'wah will have.

What we must never do, though, is to think that we are in control or that it is we who call others to Islam. Allah is in control and He, alone, calls others to Himself. We shouldn't get down-hearted or angry when our efforts seem to fail. Yunus called down Allah's wrath on the people of Nineveh. Some might feel tempted to take it upon themselves to punish the evil-doers in our world, but this is not the way of Islam. Muslims trust in Allah. In His own time and in His own way, He will punish those who do evil, just as He will reward the righteous:

"No soul knows what comfort is kept hidden for them, as a reward for their deeds."

                                        Holy Qur'an 32:17

Allah uses all things to work out His plan. In the story of Prophet Yunus (pbuh), He not only uses Yunus, but He uses the sailors and the whale and the plant, to do His will. So we should never presume to know the will of Allah, nor to make decisions on His behalf.

Finally, if you have ever felt as though you are in the belly of the whale, surrounded by darkness and with no way out, do what Prophet Yunus did. "He cried through the darkness" and admitted that there is no god but Allah and that only Allah can save.

Never give up.Trust in Allah. He can use us and all situations to do great things beyond our wildest imagination. It is by Allah's Will that we are Muslim. Just as "his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous," so we, too, like Prophet Yunus can respond to the call of Almighty Allah and make a difference in our world.

How To Clear All The Confusion
by Asma bint Shameem

Alhamdulillaah, nowadays theres access to Islaamic knowledge like never before. All it takes is a click of the mouse or a simple phone call, and one can have access to a variety of articles, ebooks and fataawa from the shuyookh. One can also watch videos and listen to lectures, literally from all over the world, just sitting at home. And as for the emails, we see plenty of those filling our inbox, from people you know and even people you don't know, educating us on our Deen.
But then along with all of that, also comes a lot of confusion.
Confusion???

Yes.... Confusion.

That's because each and every one is talking about their version of Islaam, their comprehension of how everything should be. Each and every group is interpreting the texts of the Quraan and Sunnah according to their own understanding. One group promotes a certain belief saying how good it is, while another group considers the very same belief to be totally wrong.

One party claims to be following the Quraan and Sunnah, while the others say about them that they are misguided.
Some rituals and practices are so common that they are actually considered part of the Shareeah and but the same practices are vehemently being denied by others, as bidah or innovation.

And yet, every group claims that their understanding of Islaam is the Truth, that their interpretation is correct.
So what to do?

Who's right and who's wrong?
What's part of the Shareeah and what's not?

What is Sunnah and what is bidah?
How do we know who to follow and who to avoid?
Just WHO is upon theTruth?

The vital answer lies in the noble saying of the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam). He already gave us the solution to this dilemma 1400 years ago when he said:

"For indeed, those who will still be alive after me will see many differences; so hold fast to my Sunnah, and to the sunnah of the rightly guided Khalifahs after me, Adhere to it and cling tightly to it and beware of newly-invented matters, for every newly-invented matter is an innovation and every innovation is misguidance."
(At-Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, others-- hasan sahih).

In other words, the solution....the answer to all the confusion, to all the different opinions, to all the various groups and thoughts, is..... to follow the practice of the beloved Prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) and his Noble Sahaabah. Simple and Straightforward. Nothing more. Nothing less.....a simple rule of thumb that most of us can apply.
If the Sahaabah practiced a certain act or celebrated a particular ritual, then we will also do it. BUT, if they didn't do so, then we shouldn't do it either. That is because if it was good and correct, they would have done so. But if they didn't do it, that means that there was no good in it.

We must realize that, understanding this concept of following the Sahaabah is of utmost, no, vital importance. It means the difference bewtween guidance and misguidance, between success and failure, between salvation and loss.
And that unless we understand and practice our Deen in accordance with the understanding and practice of the Companions of the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam), we would be lost. We would go astray.

In fact, if we look at the history of Islaam, we will realize that any group, any individual, any community, that went astray over all these years, did so only and only, when they left the ways of the Sahaabah and began interpreting the Deen acording to their own comprehension and understanding.

And that's why the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) gave us such specific instrucions about this sitaution, to follow in times of differences and confusions.

The entire Shareeah is replete with Orders from Allaah and His Messenger (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) to follow the Sahaabah and the obligation to do so.

Let us examine some of them

SO WHATS THE PROOF ?

PROOFS FROM THE QURAAN

Allaah is telling us that the Sahaabah are on the right path

"If they believe as you all (meaning, the Sahaabah) have believed, they shall be guided; if they reject it, they shall surely be in clear dissension. Allah will suffice you agaist them. And He is All-hearing, All-Knowing." (Surah al-Baqarah:137)

This is a clear proof that the Sahaabah, may Allaah be pleased with them all, were upon Guidance and the Truth, so whoever follows them will be upon guidance and upon the Straight Path. For it is the Sahaabah who are the ones referred to in the verse initially, and then those who came after them who took their path and followed them.

Every day in prayer, we ask Allaah to put us on their path
Every day when we stand up for prayer, we read the Fatiha at least 17 times a day. And at least 17 times, we make dua to Allaah when we say....

"Guide us to the Straight Path. The Path of those whom You have favored" (Surah al-Fatiha:6-7)
Have we ever thought, just WHO these people are that we are asking Allaah to be like? Just WHO are the people that Allaah has favored?
The answer lies in the Supreme Words of our Rabb in Surah an-Nisaa, ayah 69:

Whosoever obeys Allaah, and the Messenger, they are with those whom Allah has favored, the Prophets, the Siddiqûn (those followers of the Prophets who were first and foremost to believe in them, like Abu Bakr AsSiddiq ), the martyrs, and the righteous. And how excellent these companions are!" (Surah an-Nisaa:69)

Here Allaah is clearly telling us that He has blessed and bestowed His Favors upon the people who were the first to believe in the Prophet, as well as the Shuhadaa' and the righteous.

Now, ask yourself this. "Who besides the Sahaabah could qualify for this?"

1. The Sahaabah were the first to believe in the Prophet (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam)
2. The Sahaabah were the first and best Shuhadaa.
3. The Sahaabah were the top righteous people. No one could be better than them, except the Prophets (Alayhim ussalaam)

Then, these are the people we are asking Allaah to be like. These are the poeple we want to follow. And we ask Allaah to guide us on the Path that they traversed.

Allaah threatens to punish all those who oppose their ways and choose a path different from them:

"And whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has become clear to him and follows other than the way of the believers, We shall let him follow what he has turned to
and drive him into Hell, and evil it is as a destination" (Surah an-Nisaa':115)
And the Sahaabah were the only 'believers' when this verse was revealed. No one else.

Allaah testifies to their Imaan and confirms them to be True Believers

"Say, (O Muhammad); This is my way; I invite to Allaah with sure knowledge, I and my followers. And exalted is Allaah; and I am not of those who associate others with Him." (Surah Ibraaheem:108)
And the Sahaabah were the first followers of the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) so they are upon the path of the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) inviting to Allah with sure knowledge and certainty. Could Allaah be talking about anyone but them?

Allaah is PLEASED with them, and promised them Jannah

"And the first forerunners (in the faith) among the Muhajireen and the Ansar and those who followed them with good conduct, Allaah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great attainment." (Surah at-Taubah:100)

Subhaan Allaah! Imagine...Allaah, Subaahanhu wa Taala Himself testifying that He is pleased with the Sahaabah! Could there be a better proof than this that theirs is the Path to follow? If Allaah is pleased with them, surely they are following and practcing Islaam correctly.

Allaah praises them and approves of their acts of worship

"Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; and those with him are forceful against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating [in prayer], seeking bounty from Allah and (His) pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration." (Surah al-Fath:29)

Should we then, not go back to their ways when we are confused?

Allaah says the Sahaabah are the best

"You are the best ummah that has ever been sent to mankind. You command what is good, you forbid the evil, and you believe in Allaah." (Surah Aal-Imraan:110)
The Ulama tell us that this ayah was revealed for the Sahaabah specifically and for the rest of us generally. If they are the best in Allaah's eyes, then their way of understanding the Deen was the best too.
And there are many other ayaat. These were only some of them.

PROOFS FROM THE SUNNAH

The Prophet (sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) told us to follow their path

He (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) said: "The Jews split up into 71 sects, the Christians split up into 72 sects, and this ummah (Muslims) will split up into 73 sects; all of them are in the Fire except one." Someone asked: "which is that one O Messenger of Allah?" He replied: "Whoever is upon that which I am upon and my companions." (at-Tirmidhi--hasan)

The Prophet (sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) also called theSahaabah the BEST.
He (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) said:
"The best of my ummah is my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them." (Bukhaari, Muslim)

Just think about it. In the entire history of mankind, from the time of Adam until the Day of Judgment, never will there be an entire group, an entire generation, better than the Sahaabah. Never. And if they were the best, that means their way of practicing Islaam was also the best and most correct.

LOGICAL PROOF

1. The Sahaabah were witness to the revelation of the Quraan and the incidents that were the cause of the coming down of many of the ayaat and surahs. And they knew exactly when and why the ayaat were revealed. Thus they understood them in a very clear and correct concept.

2. They had the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) right amongst them, and thus heard and learnt from him directly. If ever they misunderstood, or didn't comprehend anything in the Deen, all they needed to do was ask and he would show them the right way.

3. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) himself taught them carefully and lovingly. So what do you say about the knowledge of one who was taught by the best teacher there could ever be?

4. The Quran was revealed in their language, in their dialect, in their time, and in their culture. Thus they received the teachings of Islam pure and unaduterated and understood it the best. They didn't mix it with foreign cultures, or corrupt beliefs or confused ideas.

5. If we look at history, we will see that in the time of the Sahaabaa, when there appeared several deviant groups, not a single Sahaabee was among these groups. As Ibn Masoud said, "Follow (us) and do not innovate, for indeed you have been sufficed."

CONCLUSION

Thus we see with certainty, that the Sahaabah were not only the best in Imaan and taqwa, but they were also the best in their knowledge and in their understanding and implementation of the Quran and Sunnah.

Therefore, their understanding is the best understanding. Their opinions are the best opinions. Their implementation of the Qur'an and Sunnah is the best implementation.

So when we differ about something, or get confused, then theirs' is the way to go and theirs' is the interpretation to follow. If they had a certain understanding in the matters of the deen, then we follow that opinion. If they celebrated a certain day or time, we do it too. If they stayed away from certain rituals or did not consider them important, then we stay away from that too.

May Allaah enable us to emulate the Sahaabah and follow in their footstep. May He grant us the Taufeeq to understand and implement the Deen the way they did. Ameen.

And Allaah knows best.

[PF:169237] Prof V.K.Tripathi: Andhra HC Setting aside Minority OBC Quota Lacks Rationale

Andhra High Court Judgment Setting aside Minority OBC Quota Lacks Rationale

V.K.Tripathi, Professor, IIT-Delhi

On May 28, 2012 the Andhra Pradesh High Court has quashed the two months old Central Government order giving 4.5% reservation to minority OBCs within the OBC quota. The judgment says that the reservation on the basis of religion is unconstitutional. It is a strange reading of the constitution. The spirit of the constitution is that there shall be no discrimination on the basis of caste, religion or class. However, if certain communities suffer social discrimination and deprivation, it provides reservation as an instrument to neutralise it. After all what is the rationale for SC/ ST reservations in admissions, jobs, and seats in Parliament and Assemblies? That these communities have been the victims of social segregation and economic oppression, hence require affirmative action to gain equality. Same argument was applied in 1990 when Mandal commission recommendations, providing 27% reservation to other back ward classes (OBCs), were implemented. Same way, if certain religious communities suffer discrimination due to religious prejudice and leg far behind, economically and educationally, they have the right to affirmative action. In fact negating this right goes against the spirit of constitution.

SC/ ST category does not include Muslim and Christian dalits, engaged in same occupations and having same status as Hindu dalits. OBC category does include certain Muslim castes, however, this percentage is small, probably around 30% of the Muslim population. Going by Gopal Sigh Commission (appointed by Indira Gandhi) report, Justice Sachar Committee report and Justice Rangnath Mishra Committee report and by common experience, one would think 90% Muslims deserve to be in the OBC and  SC/ST categories social status and educational/ economic backwardness wise. These categories cover about 75% Hindu population.

The Andhra HC judgment puts a serious question mark on all welfare schemes for minorities and strengthens the positions of people like chief minister of Gujarat who has not implemented the Centre's Minority Pre-Matric Scholarship Scheme for the last 4 years saying he is against religious discrimination while he himself watched the most violent and barbaric form of prejudice in 2002 without a semblance of efforts to stop it and with no trace of pain. It puts the future of OBC Muslim students in jeopardy who for the first time hoped to increase their intake into IITs beyond 1.5%. When OBC quota was implemented for admissions in IITs    few years ago it was met with stiff opposition from the faculty and students of IITs. One may not expect sympathetic considerations for OBC minorities from these quarters. After all Ramshila poojan was held in at least one IIT.

Affirmative action  is not an act of charity but a constitutional responsibility of the state to bring equality in society. It acted correctly in respect of caste prejudice. However, a severe lacuna in this policy has been the overlooking of prejudice in the name of religion. Just at the time when Mandal Commission recommendations were being implemented, a storm of hatred and violence was unleashed against Muslims, in the garb of Ram temple movement, through the length and breadth of the country. This movement hardened prejudice, gave it religious and patriotic legitimacy and brought the sectarian forces to power. Gujarat 2002 again reinforced it. Both these movements attacked the fundamental right of Muslim masses to live in the country with freedom and dignity. The political ascendency of these forces, with solid support from large sections of those in bureaucracy and those controlling economy only reflects the sectarian mindset of these classes. Religious hatred and discrimination are there for real. The staggering representation of Muslims in Parliament, Assemblies, local bodies, nursery schools, elite institutions, class I and II jobs, and higher echelons of economy in the range of1.5% to 3.5% against their population of 14% and severe ghattoization in cities speaks volumes. It is not difficult to see that Muslims (and Dalits) find it extremely difficult to rent an accommodation in Non-Dalit, Non-Muslim neighbourhoods, severely limiting their access to areas where opportunities for preparing for competitive exams exist. The environment in schools/ colleges is less inspiring for them. The selections to jobs, granting of licenses, contracts, and loans, the responses of police and administration are not free of prejudice hence a severe impediment to growth.

In the villages Muslims and Christians are like castes. They must be recognized as communities and rights to affirmative action must be extended to them. The movement for affirmative action for minorities, however, would have a vital responsibility to bear. It must counter the propaganda that it would eat up the benefits going to SC/ ST and OBCs. It is against none. It is only meant to have access to avenues of growth thus far confined to elite. All weaker sections must support each other's efforts for educational, economic and political emancipation. Genuine unity of people will build on the recognition of fundamental rights of all communities. Communities are communities first and religious later. During the temple movement when Bhagalpur riots had taken a toll of 950 innocent lives and the atmosphere was filled with apprehension, I thought raising the issue of affirmative action would only aggravate the communal fire, hence propagated the idea of priority in admission to professional courses to children of artisans involved in related professions, e.g., children of weavers should have priority for admission to textile engineering. However, the idea did not go far.  After seeing years of humiliation and deprivation, I think every deprived group should be taught to stand demanding its rightful due. Affirmative action can not wipe out exploitation and discrimination but consciousness on the issue can release potential of masses for a bigger upheaval.

May Allah bless you with true success of this world as well as of the hereafter!

Clarification of the important rule: it is haraam to take kaafirs as close friends and protectors

We hope that you will be able to explain, with examples, what is meant by the phrase, "Taking kaafirs as close friends and protectors is haraam."

Praise be to Allaah.

Yes, examples will certainly explain and clarify what is meant, so we will move straight on to quoting some of the most important points that the scholars and leaders of da'wah have said about different ways of showing friendship towards kaafirs.

Accepting their kufr and doubting that it is kufr at all, or refraining from labelling them as kaafirs, or praising their religion. Allaah says about the kufr of the one who accepts them (interpretation of the meaning):
"… but such as open their breasts to disbelief…" [al-Nahl 16:106].

Allaah says, making it obligatory to label the kaafirs as such (interpretation of the meaning):
"… Whoever disbelieves in Taaghoot [false deities] and believes in Allaah, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break…" [al-Baqarah 2:256].

Allaah says about the munaafiqoon (hypocrites) who prefer the kuffaar to the Muslims (interpretation of the meaning)
"… [they] say to the disbelievers that they are better guided as regards the way than the believers (Muslims)." [al-Nisa' 4:51].

Referring to them for judgement. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
"… they wish to got for judgement (in their disputes) to the Taaghoot (false judges, etc.) while they have been ordered to reject them…" [al-Nisa' 4:60]

Befriending and liking them. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
"You will not find any people who believe in Allaah and the Last Day, making friendship with those who oppose Allaah and His Messenger…" [al-Mujaadilah 58:22]

Inclining towards them, relying upon them and taking them as a support. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
"And incline not towards those who do wrong, lest the Fire should touch you…" [Hood 11:113]

Helping and supporting them against the Muslims. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
"The believers, men and women, are awliya' (helpers, supporters, friends, protectors) of one another…" [al-Tawbah 9:71].

He also says of the kuffaar that they are
" but awliya' (helpers, supporters, friends, protectors) to one another…" [al-Maa'idah 5:51].

And He says (interpretation of the meaning):
"…And if any amongst you takes them as awliya', then surely he is one of them." [al-Maa'idah 5:51].

Becoming members of their societies, joining their parties, increasing their numbers, taking their nationalities (except in cases of necessity), serving in their armies or helping to develop their weapons.

Bringing their laws and rules to the Muslim countries. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
"Do they then seek the judgement of the Days of Ignorance?…" [al-Maa'idah 5:50]

Taking them as friends in general terms, taking them as helpers and supporters, and throwing in one's lot with them. Allaah forbids all this, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):
"O you who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians as awliya' (friends, protectors, helpers, etc.), they are but awliya' to one another…" [al-Maa'idah 5:51].

Compromising with them and being nice to them at the expense of one's religion. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
"They wish that you should compromise (in religion out of courtesy) with them, so that they (too) would compromise with you." [al-Qalam 68:9].

This includes sitting with them and entering upon them at the time when they are making fun of the Signs of Allaah. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
"And it has already been revealed to you in the Book that when you hear the Verses of Allaah being denied and mocked at, then sit not with them, until they engage in a talk other than that; (but if you stayed with them), certainly in that case you would be like them…" [al-Nisa' 4:140]

Trusting them and taking them as advisors and consultants instead of the believers. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
"O you who believe! Take not as (your) bitaanah (advisors, consultants, protectors, helpers, friends, etc.) those outside your religion (pagans, Jews, Christians, and hypocrites) since they will not fail to do their best to corrupt you. They desire to harm you severely. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, but what their breasts conceal is far worse. Indeed We have made clear to you the aayaat (proofs, evidence, verses), if you understand. Lo! You are the ones who love them but they love you not, and you believe in all the Scriptures [i.e., you believe in the Tawraat and the Injeel, while they disbelieve in your Book (the Qur'aan)]. And when they meet you, they say, 'We believe.' But when they are alone, they bite the tips of their fingers at you in rage. Say: 'Perish in your rage. Certainly Allaah knows what is in the breasts (all the secrets).' If a good befalls you, it grieves them, but some evil overtakes you, they rejoice at it…" [Aal 'Imran 3:118-120].

Imaam Ahmad and Muslim reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) went out to (the battle of) Badr, and a man from among the mushrikeen followed him and caught up with him at al-Harrah. He said,
"I wanted to follow you and join you, and have some of the war-booty with you."
(The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)) said:
"Do you believe in Allaah and His Messenger?" He said,
"No."
He said,
"Go back, I do not need help from a mushrik."

From these texts it is clear that we are forbidden to appoint kaafirs to positions whereby they could find out the secrets of the Muslims and plot against them by trying to do all kinds of harm.

Putting them in administrative positions where they are bosses of Muslims and can humiliate them, run their affairs and prevent them from practising their religion. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
"… and never will Allaah grant to the disbelievers a way (to triumph) over the believers." [al-Nisa' 4:141].

Imaam Ahmad reported that Abu Moosa al-Ash'ari (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: "I said to 'Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him). 'I have a Christian scribe.' He said, 'What is wrong with you, may Allaah strike you dead! Have you not heard the words of Allaah (interpretation of the meaning), "O you who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians as awliya' (friends, protectors, helpers, etc.), they are but awliya' to one another…" [al-Maa'idah 5:51]"? Why do you not employ a haneef [i.e., a Muslim]?' I said, 'O Ameer al-Mu'mineen, I benefit from his work and he keeps his religion to himself.' He said, 'I will never honour them when Allaah has humiliated them, and I will never bring them close to me when Allaah has expelled them from His mercy.'"

Similarly, we should not employ them in Muslim homes where they can see our private matters and they bring our children up as kaafirs. This is what is happening nowadays when kaafirs are brought to Muslim countries as workers, drivers, servants and nannies in Muslim homes and families.
Neither should we send our children to kaafir schools, missionary institutions and evil colleges and universities, or make them live with kaafir families.

Imitating the kaafirs in dress, appearance, speech, etc., because this indicates love of the person or people imitated. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: 'Whoever imitates a people is one of them."

It is forbidden to imitate the kaafirs in customs, habits and matters of outward appearance and conduct that are characteristic of them. This includes shaving the beard, letting the moustache grow long, and speaking their languages, except when necessary, as well as matters of clothing, food and drink, etc.

Staying in their countries when there is no need to do so. Allaah forbade the weak and oppressed Muslims to stay among the kaafirs if they are able to migrate. He says (interpretation of the meaning):
"Verily! As for those whom the angels take (in death) while they are wronging themselves (as they stayed among the disbelievers even though emigration was obligatory for them), they (angels) say (to them): 'In what (condition) were you?' They reply, 'We were weak and oppressed on earth.' They (angels) say: 'Was not the earth of Allaah spacious enough for you to emigrate therein?' Such men will find their abode in Hell –what an evil destination! Except the weak ones among men, women and children, who cannot devise a plan, nor are the able to direct their way." [al-Nisa' 4:97-98].

Nobody will be excused for staying in a kaafir country except for those who are truly weak and oppressed and cannot migrate, or those who stay among them for a valid religious purpose such as da'wah and spreading Islam in their countries.

It is forbidden to live among them when there is no need to do so. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "I disown the one who stays among the mushrikeen."

Travelling to their countries for vacations and leisure purposes. But going there for a legitimate reason – such as medical treatment, trade, and learning specialized skills that cannot be obtained in any other way – is permitted in cases of need, and when the need has been fulfilled, it is obligatory to return to the Muslim world.

This permission is also given under the condition that the would-be traveller has sufficient knowledge to dispel his doubts, to control his physical desires, to demonstrate his religion, to be proud of being Muslim, to keep away from evil places, and to be aware and cautious of the plots of his enemies. It is also permissible, and even obligatory, to travel to their lands for the sake of da'wah and spreading Islam.

Praising them and their civilization and culture, defending them, and admiring their behaviour and skills, without taking note of their false ideology and corrupt religion. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): "And strain not your eyes in longing for the things We have given for enjoyment to various groups of them (disbelievers), the splendour of the life of this world that We may test them thereby. But the provision (good reward in the Hereafter) of your Lord is better and more lasting." [Ta-Ha 20:131]. It is also forbidden to honour them, give them titles of respect, initiate greetings to them, give them the best seats in gatherings, and give way to them in the street. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Do not be the first to greet a Jew or a Christian (do not initiate the greeting), and if you meet one of them in the street, then push him to the narrowest part of the way."

Forsaking the Islamic calendar and using their calendar, especially since it reflects their rituals and festivals, as is the case with the Gregorian (Western) calendar, which is connected to the supposed date of the birth of the Messiah (peace be upon him), which is an innovation that they have fabricated and that has nothing to do with the religion of 'Eesa (Jesus). Using this calendar implies approval of their festivals and symbols.
In order to avoid all of that, when the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) established a calendar for the Muslims during the time of 'Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him), they ignored all the systems of the kuffaar and created a new calendar starting from the date of the Prophet's Hijrah. This indicates that it is obligatory to differ from the kuffaar in this matter and others where it is the matter of distinct characteristics. And Allaah is the Source of Help.

Taking part in their holidays and festivals, helping them to celebrate them, congratulating them on these occasions or attending places where such celebrations are held. The phrase al-zoor [falsehood] in the aayah (interpretation of the meaning)
"And those who do not witness falsehood…" [al-Furqaan 25:72]
was interpreted as meaning the festivals of the kuffaar.

Using their names that have bad meanings. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) changed names whose meanings involved shirk, such as 'Abd al-'Uzza and 'Abd al-Ka'bah.

Seeking forgiveness for them and asking Allaah for mercy for them. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
"It is not (proper) for the Prophet and those who believe to ask Allaah's forgiveness for the mushrikeen, even though they be of kin, after it has become clear to them that they are the dwellers of the Fire (because they died in s state of disbelief)." [al-Tawbah 9:113]

These examples should give a clear picture of what is meant by the prohibition of forming close friendships with the kaafirs. We ask Allaah to keep our belief sound and our faith strong. And Allaah is the Source of Help.
