Nexus 5 has arrived! Google finally unveils its handset and takes the wrapper off the new KitKat Android operating system

  • Google's new Nexus 5 handset goes on sale from 1 November
  • It will be the first product to run the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system
  • The phone has a 4.95-inch screen and will be available in black or white
  • Prices start at £299 ($349) for 16GB and £339 ($399) for 32GB

It was one of the worst kept secrets in tech history thanks to a steady stream of leaked images and countless reports, but tonight Google finally unveiled its Nexus 5 handset.

It is the first device to run the new Android 4.4 KitKat operating system and comes with a 4.95-inch screen, an 8MP camera on the back coupled with a 1.3MP camera on the front.

The 4G-ready handset, made by LG, goes on sale on Google's official Play store from tomorrow and prices start at £299 ($349) for 16GB or £339 ($399) for 32GB.

Carphone Warehouse is additionally offering the handset for £295 SIM free.

Operating system: Android 4.4 KitKat

Camera: 8MP front-facing, 1.3MP rear-facing

Storage: 16GB and 32GB

Memory: 2GB RAM

Price: £299 ($349) for 16GB and £339 ($399) for 32GB

It will go up against Apple's iPhone 5S and Samsung's Galaxy S4, and is described as a 'high end' handset by the search giant.

'Five years ago we launched the first Android, now the system is healthier than ever and very vibrant,' said Sundar Pichai, Google's Android boss.

The new handset will be available in black and white, and can be woken up simply by saying 'OK Google'.

The firm says its new Android software, called KitKat, has been redesigned to allow it to run on far more handsets that previous versions.

KitKat is also designed to unify the different versions of Android available.

The announcement comes almost a year to the day since Google unveiled its hugely popular Nexus 4 device.

The Nexus 4 sold out within hours of hitting the store, and again when the stocks were replenished, and it is expected the new handset will be just as popular.

Google's Nexus 5 comes with an ultra-high resolution screen that contains 1920 x 1080 pixels, giving the device a pixel-per-inch (PPI) rating of 445.

This sits between Apple's 4-inch iPhone 5S screen with a PPI of 326, and the 469 PPI screen of the 4.7-inch HTC One.

The Nexus 5, pictured, is powered by the latest high-speed, power-saving Snapdragon 800 chip from Qualcomm also seen in the Samsung Note III and Nokia's new Lumia 1520. According to tech journalist Mark Prigg, the handset 'feels like a truly high-end phone'

GOOGLE NEXUS 5 - MAILONLINE'S FIRST IMPRESSION

Taking a leaf from Apple's book, the Nexus 5 has undergone a dramatic weight loss since its last version - and is thinner, lighter and faster than any other Nexus.

It feels like a truly high-end phone, and Google has spent a lot of time perfect not just how it works, but crucially how it feels.

The touchscreen, buttons and casing are all a significant improvement, and at 130g, it's incredibly light.

Android has also got a big boost, and KitKat, the version running here, is excellent.

It's been tweaked, polished and improved far more than previous versions, and feel extremely snappy in use - with searches beginning instantly, and Google Now available with a simple left swipe.

Overall, this is arguably the best Android handset on the market - and should see Google making inroads in the high end smartphone market where Apple has traditionally dominated.

It's not enough to persuade Apple owners to switch, but with the Nexus 5 Google has shown that it can keep Android owners wanting a true quality handset on board.

Review by Mark Prigg in San Francisco

The Nexus 5 is powered by the latest high-speed, power-saving Snapdragon 800 chip from Qualcomm also seen in the Samsung Note III and Nokia's new Lumia 1520.

It has 2GB of RAM and will be available with 16GB or 32GB of storage.

'How do we get Android to work for the next billion people - that's our goal for the 2014,' said Pichai.

'We also wanted a more beautiful, immersive experience,' he said.

'How do we change form a grid of applications to a smart experience.'

The firm will integrate popular apps such as IMDB and OpenTable into Android to allow users to use apps in search results.

'At the moment you have a grid of applications, and click on what you want.

'Our vision is that every time you pick up your phone and glance at it, you have the right information - and we're taking our first steps in that direction.'

David Phelan, Mobile Technology Advisor at Carphone Warehouse said: 'Google's own-brand phones are always a talking point.'

'The Nexus 5 has been hotly anticipated and Google fans like Nexus because it shows Android at its purest and most advanced: the latest Kit-Kat software will be on this phone first.

This phone is for early adopters, Google fans and 'power users' who want a high-end phone at a keen price.

'Now Android is such a powerful force in mobile, we can expect the Nexus 5 with its cutting-edge specs to beat even the success of the Nexus 4.'

In August, Google slashed the price of its Nexus 4 from £239 for the 8GB down to £159, adding fuel to the predictions a new handset was on its way.

After Google accidentally leaked shots of a new handset last month, images of the rumoured Nexus 5 have appeared on the Play store with a price of $349.

Leaked shots of the new handset made a brief appearance on the firm's Play store earlier this month, pictured left, shown alongside Google's current Nexus 7, centre, and Nexus 10, right. It had a price tag of $349, which matched what the Nexus 4 was sold at from launch

GOOGLE'S ANDROID 4.4 KITKAT OPERATING SYSTEM

Google teamed up with Nestle last month to launch the next version of its Android operating system, called Android 4.4 KitKat.

There had been speculation that the latest version would be named Android Key Lime Pie because each release begins with the letter of the alphabet that follows the previous.

To mark the announcement, the KitKat homepage was redesigned as a parody of Google software releases.

It is the successor to Android Jelly Bean that launched on the new Nexus 7 in July.

Google then updated all of the core apps that ship automatically with its Android software, including Gmail, Google+ and YouTube, earlier this week.

The Nexus 5 forms part of Google's existing Nexus range that also includes the new Nexus 7 tablet, built by Asus.

It launched in July and has a 7-inch, 1980 x 1200 display. It also has a 5MP rear-facing camera and a faster 1.5Ghz processor compared to the first-generation Nexus 7 device.

It was the first gadget to be shipped on Google's Jelly Bean operating system, Android 4.3.

Leaked shots of a new handset made a brief appearance on the firm's Play store earlier this month, shown alongside Google's current Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 models. It had a price tag of $349.

Nexus 5 printing
Nexus 5 caller ID

The handset is the first to take advantage of the KitKat 4.4 operating system, which allows users to print documents and photos remotely (pictured left) and prioritise contacts (right) as well as using a smarter caller ID system, which sources numbers of businesses from Google Maps

This price matched what the Nexus 4 was sold at from launch.

Carphone Warehouse is offering the device for £295 without a SIM, or free from £32 per month.

The first 1,000 customers to order the Nexus 5 on a 4G contract via the Carphone Warehouse website will also get a free Google Nexus 7 Wi-Fi 16GB tablet worth £139

KITKAT 4.4 FEATURES

  • An app called 'the future is calling' automatically prioritises contacts based on the people you talk to the most.
  • A smarter caller ID looks for matches in Google Maps for unknown business numbers
  • Users can print photos and documents on-the-go using Google Cloud print and HP eprint printers
  • Open and save files on Google Drive and other cloud storage services
  • The Hangouts app, puts all SMS and MMS messages plus video calls  together in the same app
  • When using fitness apps on Nexus 5, the phone acts as a pedometer to count steps
  • Faster multitasking is achieved  by optimising memory usage so switching between apps is quicker
  • An immersive mode automatically hides everything except what you really want to see, such as games and films

[PF:172788] Drinking three liters of water a day

Drinking three litres of water a day took TEN YEARS off my face: Sarah, 42, was hoping to solve her headaches and poor digestion... just look what else happened

  • One in five women drinks less than the recommended daily intake of water
  • Every system and function in our body depends on water...
  • Especially because the liquid flushes toxins from vital organs

You might think I'd have little in common with a camel, but we do share one useful skill: both of us can go for a very long time without water.

Usually I start my day with a cup of tea, then I might have a glass of water with my lunch and one with dinner - that's about a litre of liquid in 24 hours. It feels like plenty, but apparently it's not nearly enough.

After years of suffering headaches and poor digestion I spoke to a neurologist about my regular headaches and a nutritionist about my poor digestion, and both told me I should be drinking up to three litres of liquid a day for my body to function at its best.

After four weeks: Sarah looks like a different woman

After four weeks: Sarah looks like a different woman

Then, when I read a recent survey suggesting that at least one in five women in the UK consumes less than the recommended daily intake of water, I decided to conduct an experiment. What would happen if I drank the recommended amount every day for a month?

The photograph of me taken the day I started this trial demonstrates perfectly - and rather frighteningly - what a lack of hydration does to a face.

I am 42, but have to admit I look more like 52 in this picture, which is shocking. There are dark shadows under and around my eyes, which make me look exhausted, a profusion of wrinkles and strange reddish blotches, and my skin lacks any lustre. It looks dead.

My daughters, Alice, eight, and Betty, four, tell me I look 'about 100 years old' in this photograph and I have to agree.

Even my lips look shrivelled. This is all classic evidence of poor hydration, apparently. Every system and function in our body depends on water.

It flushes toxins from the vital organs, carries nutrients to cells, provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues, and eliminates waste.

Not drinking enough means all these functions become impaired. So I decided to see how I would look and feel if I drank three litres of water every day for 28 days. The results were astonishing . . .

Dehydration: One in five women consumes less than the recommended daily intake of water

Dehydration: One in five women consumes less than the recommended daily intake of water

Week One

Weight: 8st 7lb

Waist: 28in

Three litres of water is just over five pints, which sounds like an awful lot. I visit my local GP in Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire, to be sure there can be no adverse health implications to upping my water intake so dramatically.

He is very encouraging. 'I suggest you have a big jug of water in the morning, then another in the afternoon and another in the evening,' he says. 'Your kidneys, which filter waste products from the blood before turning it to urine, will quickly feel the benefit, as they will be getting a good flush through.'

I usually have a wee three times a day: when I get up, before I go to bed and at some point in the afternoon. By the end of my first day of drinking more water, I have had six and my usually sluggish bowels are much more lively.

I exfoliate my face every day to try to get rid of dry patches before I apply moisturiser, but suddenly I seem to be breaking out in spots. Maybe it's all the toxins coming out of my skin. A few days into the experiment I'm still urinating five or six times a day but it's clear now, rather than dark yellow.

I'm enjoying lots of cups of tea. My husband says that's cheating, but I tell him the British Nutritional Foundation says 'moderate amounts of caffeine do not cause dehydration, so they do count towards your fluid intake'.

I meet friends for a drink one night, remembering that alcohol is a diuretic (a substance which promotes the production of urine), acting on the kidneys. For every one alcoholic drink, your body can eliminate up to four times as much liquid.

I assume a white wine spritzer is a good option because the alcohol is diluted with soda water, and I sip water between alcoholic drinks throughout the evening.

Hangover headaches result from dehydration: the body's organs try to make up for a lack of water by stealing it from the brain, as a result of which it actually shrinks.

Headaches result from the pulling on the membranes that connect your brain to your skull. Ouch. Luckily, I escape all this and wake up hangover-free.

For years I've been doing ten minutes of yoga every morning straight after I get up, but I've been feeling stiffer over the past six months. Yet since I started drinking more water my flexibility has improved. Gemma Critchley, from the British Dietetic Association, confirms that water helps lubricate the joints.

Week Two: The blotches on my face are diminishing and the shadows around my eyes less pronounced

Week Two: The blotches on my face are diminishing and the shadows around my eyes less pronounced

Week Two

Weight: 8st 6lb (lost a pound)

Waist: 28in

My complexion is improving and my skin tone is more even. I still have wrinkles under my eyes, but they look less crepey and shadowy than before.

The blotches on my face are diminishing, and the shadows around my eyes are less pronounced.

I feel pleased when my sister-in-law tells me my skin looks clearer than it did a week ago. I have a busy week with lots of time away from home, so I stock up on half-litre bottles of mineral water I can carry around in my bag. A week's worth costs just over £8. If I spread my water intake over the day, that's half a litre when I wake up, another with breakfast, one with lunch, one in the afternoon, one with my evening meal then another before bed. It sounds like a lot, but I'm finding it manageable.

Today, I've noticed my breath smells less 'breathy', maybe because I've ditched tea - I decided water was better for me. I'm certainly not missing the sweet, milky taste it left in my mouth.

Gemma Critchley says: 'Water is obviously the best choice since it has no calories and will hydrate you efficiently.' I say I might try juice instead of water sometimes, just for the taste and variety, but she warns me not to.

'If you drink a large glass of juice, you could be consuming more energy than you need,' she says, which would mean weight gain.

I haven't had a headache for over a week now, which is unusual for me, and I'm delighted that my bowels are working so much better. Result!

I went shopping this afternoon in Leeds, but having to find a lavatory three times in five hours was irritating - they always seem to be in the most hidden corner of every shop.

I'd expected my stomach to feel bloated with all the extra water but it's actually flatter than usual. And my husband says the cellulite on my bottom and thighs has vanished.

Surely this is too good to be true?

Week Three: My skin looks plumper and more nourished

Week Three: My skin looks plumper and more nourished

Week Three

Weight: 8st 6lb

Waist: 27.5in (lost half an inch)

The dark rings and wrinkles under my eyes have virtually disappeared, and my skin looks plumper and more nourished. My friend, who is a beauty therapist, says this is because the water is helping my skin cells regenerate more efficiently.

I've noticed I've stopped rubbing my eyes when I wake up in the morning. They used to be dry and full of sleep, but not now. All this extra water must be keeping them moist.

I'm feeling guilty about all the plastic bottles I've been using so I'm back on Yorkshire tap water, which I carry around in a re-usable water bottle.

I have to take a long train journey and I realise afterwards how productive I felt and how easy I found it to concentrate, rather than having my customary snooze.

Dr Emma Derbyshire, senior lecturer in nutritional physiology at Manchester Metropolitan University and adviser to the Natural Hydration Council, says: 'Our brain is 73 per cent water, so poor hydration can affect how it functions. Dehydration can reduce our ability to concentrate as well as our cognitive performance.'

The downside was having to use train toilets. Dreadful.

I'm eating less because drinking water with meals makes me feel fuller quicker. I used to snack, but I was reaching for food when I was actually thirsty. Studies show 37 per cent of people mistake thirst for hunger.

When I put on eye make-up, my eyes seem less wrinkled. When I rubbed an eye-shadow applicator over my eyelid, it used to drag the skin with it, too, but now my skin seems to have more elasticity.

Week Four: I am going to keep on drinking three litres of water every day

Week Four: I am going to keep on drinking three litres of water every day

Week Four

Weight: 8st 5lb (lost another 1lb)

Waist: 27in (another half an inch)

I genuinely can't believe the difference in my face. I look like a different woman. The dark shadows around my eyes have all but disappeared and the blotches have gone. My skin is almost as dewy as it was when I was a child. The transformation is nothing short of remarkable.

I'm feeling leaner and fitter, too, which is amazing, since the only thing I've changed is the amount of water I drink. My best friend says she's worried about how much water I'm consuming - she's heard rumours about Nigella Lawson being an 'aquaholic' who drinks three litres before bed.

But I am following safe guidelines under the supervision of my GP, so I am able to reassure her.

I even enjoy another boozy night out but drink lots of water along the way and wake up feeling fresh as a daisy. Whatever happens, I am going to keep on drinking three litres of water a day - and would advise every woman to do the same (after checking with her doctor, of course).

I feel fitter, leaner and healthier, and my husband and friends tell me I look ten years younger. Who in their right mind would not want to try something which gets such incredible results?

[PF:172787] An Ambitious Project - Paris In China

Rather mysteriously, very little information about the town has been made available since it's opening in 2007. This might be because it's one of the latest in a string of near ghost towns that reveal a very serious problem in China– a property bubble that's about to burst.

The last known population of Tianducheng is around 2,000, yet the town can comfortably house over 100,000 people. Most people can't afford to live in the property available in Tianducheng and for now. Tianducheng remains sparsely populated and is now considered as a "Ghost Town", according to local media. Many of the apartments with Parisian-style wrought iron balconies are occupied by groups of migrant laborers working on the continued construction of the community and the French-themed village park next door. This ambitious project is a perfect example of the massive over supply and over valuation of property across China. So why build? Because it promotes GDP growth– the government's number one priority.

 Some Practial Reminders

How to offer  Salat-ul-JANAZA?:

Du'as from holy Qur'an for Parents& Offspring:

Du'as from the holy Qur'an:

Hadith: Abu Hurayrah (ra) reported that Allah's Messenger said: "A Muslim has five rights upon other Muslims: Responding to his Salam, Answering his invitation (to food), Making Tashmeet when he sneezes, Visiting him when he is sick, and Following his Janazah when he dies." (Bukhari and Muslim).

Hadith: Allah's Messenger said: "Whoever attends the Janazah until it is finished, will earn one Qirat, and who ever stays until the burial, will earn two Qirats. Someone asked: What a Qirat means? The Prophet answered:'It means rewards as big as a great mountain" (Bukhari & Muslim).

Hadith: On the authority of Suhaib, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported as having said: "How wonderful is the affair of the believer, for his affair is all good, and this applies to no one except the believer. If something good happens to him, he gives thanks and that is good for him, and if something bad happens to him, he bears it with patience, and he will be rewarded for that, so everything that Allah has decreed for the Muslim is good" (Muslim).

Hadith: According to an authentic hadith: "The greatest reward comes with the greatest trial. When Allah loves a people He tests them. Whoever accepts that wins His pleasure but whoever is discontent with that earns His wrath" (At-Tirmidhi).

Al-Hasan Al-Basri (may Allah bless his soul) said, "Do not hate the trials that befall you or the calamities that happen to you, for they may be something that you hate but it leads you to salvation, and there may be something that you love, but it brings to you your doom."

[karachi-Friends] Daily Qur'an & Hadith 01 Nov 2013 (26 Zhu'al-Hijjah 1434)

English Translation of Al-Quran

[26].Surah Ash-Shuara [The Poets]

Ayat 109. "No reward do I ask of you for it (my Message of Islamic Monotheism), my reward is only from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).

Ayat 110. "So keep your duty to Allah, fear Him and obey me." Ayat 111. They said: "Shall we believe in you, when the meanest (of the people) follow you?"

Ayat 112. He said: "And what knowledge have I of what they used to do? Ayat 113. "Their account is only with my Lord, if you could (but) know.

Ayat 114. "And I am not going to drive away the believers. Ayat 115. I am only a plain warner."

Tafseer of Ayat 109 to 115. "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds: "So fear Allah, and obey me."Note the repetition rounds off the argument. They said: "Shall we believe in thee when it is the meanest that follow thee?" The leaders of the people are speaking, as the Quraish leaders spoke in the time of the Holy Prophet. "We know that thou hast been trustworthy in thy life. But look at the 'rag tag and bob tail' that follow thee! Dost thou expect us to be like them or to be classed with them?" His answer was: "I know nothing against them; if they have done any wrong, or are only hypocrites, they are answerable to Allah; how can I drive them away from me, seeing that I am expressly sent to admonish all people?" He said: "And what do I know as to what they do? "Their account is only with my Lord, if ye could (but) understand. "I am not one to drive away those who believe. All people who have faith have the right to come and listen to Allah's Word and receive Allah's Mercy, whether they are publicans and sinners, "Harijans" and "low-caste" men, men of "superior" or "inferior" races. The Prophet of Allah welcomes them all, as His Message had to shine before the whole world. "I am sent only to warn plainly in public."

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Saad bin Abe Waqqas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said, "Allah loves a slave who is pious, free of all wants and the unnoticed.''

[Muslim Book 42, Chapter 01, Hadith # 7072].

Lesson : as mentioned above in Surah Ash-Shuara Ayat 109. "No reward do I ask of you for it, my reward is only from the Lord. "Isolation, according to this Hadith, is recommendable for the obedience and worship of Allah. It is particularly approved when the prevalent corruption and social intercourse endanger religion, or its implementation looks no more feasible.
