To:

CALL FOR PAPERS & PARTICIPATION

FOUNDATION OF ISLAMIC FINANCE CONFERENCE (FIFC)

April 2-3, 2014
Durham Centre for Islamic Economics and Finance
Durham University Business School
Durham University, United Kingdom

Foundation of Islamic Finance Series

The Sixth Foundation of Islamic Finance (FIFC) Conference is to be held at the Durham University, Durham, United Kingdom. FIFC series, originally funded via a large 2006-11 Australian Government grant, is a joint collaboration of The University of Melbourne's National Centre of Excellence in Islamic Studies (NCEIS) and the Monash University in Melbourne. A group of eminent scholars from around the world are networked as associate researchers under the FIFC. The sole aim of their efforts is to publish rigorously done research studies as books (under the Edward Elgar Foundation of Islamic Finance series) and as journal publications to advance the emergingdiscipline, Islamic Finance. As self-funded non-profit organisation, it manages to offer an annual meeting for deliberation, and then publish notable literature since 2006.

You are invited to participate in the 2014 meeting with the conference theme "Islamic Economics and Finance: The New Frontier": Papersrelating to Islamic economics and finance including papers covering the Shariah aspects of Islamic economics and finance are welcome in this series.

The 2014 meeting is jointly organised by the INCEIF (International Center for Education in Islamic Finance) ISRA, located in Malaysia, and Durham University. It will be held at the conference facilities of Durham University in United Kingdom. The National Centre for Financial Economics Research (NCFER) at the AACSB-accredited University Putra Malaysia and the Arshad Ayub Graduate Business School (AAGBS) Universiti Teknologi MARA, are associated with the FIFC.

The venue and the dates were specially chosen to bring this series outside of Asia Pacific Region, to enable participation at an affordable cost in a developed country. Four best papers will be chosen andpublished in international journal while a book on Conventional and Islamic Insurance: Theory & Practice will be published under the Foundation Series. The chapters for the book will be written by eminent experts and presented at the FIFC before being edited by the series editor(s). Three books from previousFIFC meetings (on banking; sukuk; banking products) and journal articles have been well received by the industry and the academia.

This series of conferences gained support from a number of eminent colleges in the UK; Australia, Malaysia & UAE, and supported by financial/research organizations (National Australia Bank, Kuwait Finance House, Bond Pricing Agency, etc.) involved in Islamic Banking, Insurance, and Finance attracting good participation from both academic and professional sectors. The aim is to encourage open discussion leading to quality publications: authentic books, refereed journal articles, doctoral proposal discussions and conference proceedings. All papers will be carefully peer-reviewed by a panel of established experts before being accepted for presentation. The main criterion for paper selection is: Does the paper advance the building of knowledge relevant for the Islamic Finance being taught in tertiary institutions and for managing a new industry?

Islamic Finance has grown rapidly over its short 50-year history. The total assets managed by some 570 institutions in more than 76 countries are estimated to be as large as US$ 4 trillion. It is growing at about 25-20 per cent since the Global Financial Crisis. The UK government has passed new laws in October, 2013, to permit the offer, listing and trading of the Islamic debt instruments called sukuk in the London Exchange. Sukuk is already traded in 12 markets. It has some desirable features to restrain too much borrowing with its asset-backed contracting terms. London is expected to spur its further growth.

Among the key scholars participating are eminent persons: Habib Ahmad, Dato Mohamed Ariff, Mohamed Ariff, MuratÇizakça, Mervyn Lewis, Munawar Iqbal, Abbas Mirakhor, Tariqullah Khan, etc. The Governor of the Bank Negara Malaysia is likely to participate along with the CEO/President of INCEIF (Dawood Vicary). [karachi-Friends] Daily Qur'an & Hadith 04 Jan 2014 (02 Rabi'ul Awwal 1435)

English Translation of Al-Quran

[27].Surah Al-Naml [The Ants]

Ayat 63. Is not He (better than your gods) Who guides you in the darkness of the land and the sea, and Who sends the winds as heralds of glad tidings, going before His Mercy (rain)? Is there any ilaha (god) with Allah? High Exalted be Allah above all that they associate as partners (to Him)!.

Tafseer of Surah Al Naml (The Ants) Ayat 63. Or, Who guides you through the depths of darkness on land and sea, and Who sends the winds as heralds of glad tidings, going before His Mercy? (Can there be another) god besides Allah.- High is Allah above what they associate with Him! After external nature, our attention was drawn to our inner consciousness; after that, it is drawn here to our social and collective life, in which we use the forces of nature for international intercourse, trade, agriculture, production, and economic well-being generally. In the next verse, we are asked to contemplate creation from its primeval stages, through its intermediate processes, to the final Destiny in a new creation-a new heaven and a new earth.

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Abu Musa (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said, "The similitude of guidance and knowledge with which Allah has sent me is like a rain which has fallen on some ground. A fertile part of earth has absorbed water and brought forth much grass and herbs. Another part, which is solid, held the water and Allah benefits men thereby, who drank and gave others to drink, and used it for irrigation. But some of it has fallen on a portion of sandy land which neither retains the water nor produces herbage. Such is the likeness of the man who understands the religion of Allah and who gets benefit of what Allah has sent me with; he learns and teaches others. It is also the likeness of the man who neither raises his head on that account (meaning he does not benefit from what the Prophet  [SAWW](PBUH) was sent with) nor accepts Allah's Guidance with which I am sent".

[Al-Bukhari Book 01,Chapter 03, Hadith # 079]

Lesson : as mentioned above in Surah Al-Naml Ayat 63Is not He (better than your gods) Who guides you in the darkness” In this Hadith the guidance and knowledge which was sent to mankind through the Prophet (PBUH) is compared to the rain which is beneficial, because this knowledge resuscitates the dead hearts as does the rain to a barren land. One who makes use of this knowledge is likened to a good soil, and one who acquires this knowledge and imparts it to others but does not put it into practice is considered akin to a hard land which holds water and other people utilize it. A person who neither learns it nor acts upon it is like a desolate land which neither holds water nor produces anything. Such a person is the worst of all because he neither himself benefits from it nor lets others make use of it. This Hadith induces one to acquire knowledge, impart it to others, put it into actual practice and warns people from neglecting this duty. .

[PF:173027] Miracles that took place at the time of Beloved Prophet's Blessed Birth

The birth of our Beloved Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, together with Its miracles have been transmitted to us by his mother Sayyidah Aamina Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha and those in attendance.

As our beloved Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, was born a radiant light accompanied him and he lifted his head towards the heavens and the mother of Othman's Abil-As's son witnessed stars lowering themselves and a light so bright appeared that she could see nothing other than light.

Abu Nu'aym reports from Abdullah bin Abbas Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhuma, who narrated that the mother of the Messenger SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam, Sayyidah Amina Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha used to state,

"When the Messenger of Allah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam was born, he fell straight into prostration. Then I saw a white cloud from the sky appearing and covering the Messenger of Allah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam such that HE SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam disappeared from me. When the cloud appeared, I saw that the Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam was covered in a white woolly shawl and there was a green mat spread on the floor. Within the hands of the Messenger SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam there were three keys made of diamonds and there was an unseen voice heard saying, 'The Messenger of Allah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam has grasped the key of giving victory, the key of giving benefit and the key of Prophethood.' Then I saw another cloud which enclosed the Messenger of Allah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam such that he disappeared from my view and it became illuminated. I saw that the Messenger of Allah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam is holding a folded piece of green silk in his blessed hands and an unseen voice was heard was saying, 'How great! How great! The Messenger of Allah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam has grasped the whole world; all the creation has entered into his grasp, with none left out.'"

Ash Shifa, the mother of Abdur Rahman Ibn Awf Radi Allahu Anhuma attended his birth and tells us,

"When he dropped into my hands he sneezed and I heard a voice saying, 'May Allah have mercy upon you!' The entire horizon became illuminated for me whereby I was able to see the castle of the Greeks."

On the authority of Abdullah ibn Abbas Radi Allahu Anhuma who narrates;

"One of the signs of the birth of the Prophet Sallallaho Alaihi wa Sallam was that all the animals of the Quraish talked that night and said, 'We swear by the Lord of the Ka'ba! That Prophet is coming who is the guardian/protector of the entire world and is the sun of its people" (shedding the light of guidance). [Al-Khasais al-Kubra with reference to Abi Nu'aym from ibn 'Abbās Radi Allahu Anhu, the chapter on Ma Dhahara Fi Layla Moulidihi, (Markaz Ahl Sunnat, Gujarat), Vol. 1, Page 47]

Hafidh al-Iraqi mentioned in his book, Al-Mawrid Al-Haniyyu fi Mawlidis Saniyyi, from the route of Baqi Ibn Makhlad,

"Some scholars mentioned that another sign which accompanied the birth of the Prophet was that the devils were stricken with falling stars and were blocked from hearing any of the news exchanged by the angels in the sky. Among the signs is that Iblis, the forefather of the devils, was blocked from the news of the sky so he rang out a very loud scream. Likewise, he rang out when he was damned, when he was taken out of Paradise, and when the Chapter of the Fatihah was revealed." [Al-Mawrid Al-Haniyyu fi Mawlidis Saniyyi]

Shaykh Abdullah Ibn Muhammad al-Harari records from Al-Bayhaqi in his book Ar-Rawaeh al-Zakiyya fi Mawlidi Khayiril Bariyyah:

ومنها ما سُمع من أجواف الأصنام ومن أصوات الهواتف بالبشارة بظهور الحق في وقت الزوال
Also among the signs are the sounds that were heard at the time of Zawal (beginning of noon time) coming from the interiors of the idols in Makkah announcing the good news of the arrival of Prophet Muhammad SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam. [Ar-Rawaeh al-Zakiyya fi Mawlidi Khayiril Bariyyah, Page 28]

https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/423995_10151196815390334_693009002_n.jpg

Bayhaqi and Ibn Asakir and others narrated from Hani al-Makhzumi that he said:

At the birth of the beloved prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam every idol fell on its face; and the palaces of Chosroes, emperor of Persia, trembled, and fourteen of the towers fell; Lake Sawah that was worshiped disappeared; The Valley of Samavah, where for a number of years no water had been seen, now flowed with that element; The fire of Fars, which had not been extinguished for a thousand years, were quenched that night, on which likewise, the wisest of the Magian clerics dreamed that a number of strong camels led the horses of Arabia across the Tigris into their territory. On that night a light appeared in Hijaz filling the whole world and moving eastward; on the morning following, the thrones of all the kings were found reversed; the skill of the soothsayers (fortune-teller) departed, the magic of the sorcerers ended.

  • The fourteen (14) fallen balconies from the palace of Kisra mentioned in the hadith was a sign that the ruler ship of the Persians would last for only fourteen (14) more Persian kings.  And this is what happened — the fourteenth (and last) Persian king ruled during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Uthman Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu.

  • The fire of the Persians is in reference to a fire that they had kept burning day and night for one thousand (1,000) years. At the time of the birth of the Prophet, the Persians were fire-worshipers. They worshipped the fire unrightfully. On the night of the birth of the Prophet, this fire went out — a sign of the truthful call of Prophet Muhammad to worship Allah alone.

  • The lake of Sawah/Sivah that was worshiped mentioned in the hadith was a lake so vast that ships used to sail in it. It dried up when the Prophet was born.
