Edwardian street style: Astonishing amateur images which capture the fashion of women in London and Paris over a century ago

Street blogging may be considered to be a modern phenomenon, but a series of images unearthed by Kensington and Chelsea Libraries prove that the practice may date as far back as the early 1900's.
The Library service has published several wonderful images by the late amateur photographer Edward Linley Sambourne, who was also the chief cartoonist for Punch, which give an amazing insight into the street style of the woman of London and Paris over a century ago.
Sambourne's beautiful street photography captures the casual side of Edwardian fashion in a manner which is rarely seen

In one image, which was taken in Cromwell Road , South Kensington in July 1906, a woman looks in the direction of the camera as she strolls along the street, dressed in an ankle length plaid skirt, matching jacket and a sophisticated hat.
In fact hats seems to be the most popular accessory of the woman pictured , and there is an eclectic mix of straw hats,  church hats and veiled hats amongst all of the photographs.
However there is a distinct lack of handbags, with less than half of the unnamed subjects opting to carry what has now become a major staple of modern fashion.
In another image, a woman is seen walking along the pavement in Kensington guiding a cycle with one arm and rearranging her enormous hat with the other.

But perhaps the most modern image is of a young woman, who Sambourne describes as a 'shop girl', strolling down Kensington Church Street completely engrossed in a book.
Perhaps unsurprisingly the women of Paris are dressed slightly more stylishly than the Londoners with parasols being a common fixture.
While corsets and long, fitted dresses are undoubtedly the style of choice, there are also some shorter, below the knee styles on display.

The Parisian images were taken during Sambourne's trip to the French capital in 1906.
The cartoonist took up photography as an aid to his art and took many fascinating images of Victorian/Edwardian society.
His wife Marion wrote in her diary that photography had become as much an obsession as a hobby.

Month of Ramadan & Rewards for those who Fasts

[Sahih Bukhari : volume 3, Book 31, Number 118]

Narrated Abu Huraira (Radi Allah Anhu): Allah's Apostle (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam) said, "Fasting is a shield (or a screen or a shelter). So, the person observing fasting should avoid sexual relation with his wife and should not behave foolishly and impudently, and if somebody fights with him or abuses him, he should tell him twice, 'I am fasting." The Prophet added, "By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, the smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. (Allah says about the fasting person), 'He has left his food, drink and desires for My sake. The fast is for Me. So I will reward (the fasting person) for it and the reward of good deeds is multiplied ten times."

[Sahih Bukhari : volume 3, Book 31, Number 120]

Narrated Sahl (Radi Allah Anhu): The Prophet Muhammad (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam) said, "There is a gate in Paradise called Ar-Raiyan, and those who observe fasts will enter through it on the Day of Resurrection and none except them will enter through it. It will be said, 'Where are those who used to observe fasts?' They will get up, and none except them will enter through it. After their entry the gate will be closed and nobody will enter through it."

[Sahih Bukhari : volume 3, Book 31, Number 122]

Narrated Abu Huraira (Radi Allah Anhu): Allah's Apostle (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam) said, "When Ramadan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened."

[Sahih Bukhari : volume 3, Book 31, Number 123]

Narrated Abu Huraira (Radi Allah Anhu): Allah's Apostle (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam) said, "When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of the heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained."

Our Lord, pour down upon us patience, and make our steps firm and assist us against the unbelieving people.

First sermon

All praise is due to Allah and I testify that there is no deity save Him, having no associates. I also bear witness that Muhammad is His Servant and Messenger. Allah has preferred him over many others and selected him to be His Messenger. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon His Prophet Muhammad, his family, his companions and those who follow in their footsteps until the Last Day.

As to what follows, I call upon myself and all of you to be ever conscious and do construct our lives in accordance to what He has ordered us as He says, "O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment." (Al Ahzab:70-71).

O Believers,

Allah, Glory be to Him, says, "So for this let the competitors compete." (Al Mutaffifin:26), illustrating how people in this world are vying to achieve goals and look forward to having their wishes granted. In this pursuit, they all hope for a good end. But the most virtuous way in terms of reward and status for people to strive for is to engage in good deeds for the sake of Allah.

For this, there is no better time than the holy month of Ramadan as Allah, Exalted be He, has made it the season of goodness and good deeds. He thus made it an opportunity for His Servants to obtain extra reward and get closer to their Creator.

Its benefit was clearly shown by the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) when he said, "when it is the first night of the month of Ramadan, the devils and the resolutely evil jinn are enchained, the gates of Hell are firmly locked such that no one of them are opened, the gates of Paradise are opened such that none of them are closed, and a caller proclaims, 'O pursuer of good, proceed and O pursuer of evil, refrain.' [There are those] whom Allah salvages from Hell and that is in every [Ramadan] night."

Our Master Muhammad (pbuh) also urged us to perfect ourselves so that to welcome the holy month of Ramadan with pure souls and hearts when he said, "If one of you is fasting, he should avoid sexual relation with his wife and quarreling, and if somebody should fight or quarrel with him, he should say, 'I am fasting'."

In the light of His guidance, the righteous people used to prepare for the blessed Ramadan by supplicating to Allah, Glory be to Him, to give them life till they can witness Ramadan. When it ends, they then beseech Him for another six months to accept their fasting and prayers. They used to say, "May we, with Your grace, reach the presence and the benefits of the holy month of Ramadan."

This is an evidence of the high status of the holy month of Ramadan, for the cause of which the pious servants apply themselves to their prayers and supplications a year long.

So do strive, servants of Allah, in Ramadan to be amongst the people of acceptance by avoiding whatever can contradict the sublime merit of this great duty. Our Guide Muhammad (pbuh) said, "who did not abandon false words, and actions based on falsehood (while fasting), Allah is indifferent to their giving up food and drink."

Dear Believers,

As you are on the threshold of Ramadan, the month of mercy and forgiveness, you will be overwhelmed with Allah's security and His mercy will be descended. Please be aware therefore to seize this great opportunity so may Allah accept your supplications and forgive your misdeeds. Also bear in mind that during this holy month, Allah, Glory be to him, look at what you are contending for and He boasts about you to His angels. So whoever remembers Allah and asks His forgiveness in Ramadan, Allah fulfills his wishes.

As such, we need to engage in goodness and always be aware that those who are denied Allah's mercy are really doomed to misery. Ramadan is the right time to well benefit from the flow of its blessings by increasing goodness and protecting our senses from indulging in the perception of objects that Allah has made unlawful for us. Indeed it is the right time also for us to acquire the enduring good deeds and ultimately earn forgiveness and Paradise. On this matter, Ali ibn Abu Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "fasting is not abstaining from food and drink; rather fasting is [abstaining] from lying, falsehood and laghw (vain and evil talk)."

In the same regard, Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "when you are fasting, all your senses: ears, eyes and tongue... must fast with you and not lie. Let your fasting day be tranquil and solemn and do not let your fasting day be like any normal day."

O blessed those who get the favour of Allah by dedicating their time to recite the holy Quran, standing up for prayer at night and refraining from obscene talk and slander. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, "Allah will have mercy upon a servant who said good and won (a reward) or stayed silent- instead of dictating evil- and emerged safe."

May Allah, the Almighty, bless for us the remaining days of Shaaban, prolong our life to witness Ramadan, help us observe prayers, fast, lower our gaze, protect our tongue, and recite the Quran. May Allah let us be among His virtuous servants and help us to obey Him and those He has ordained upon us to obey, in compliance with His injunctions: "O ye who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and those charged with authority among you." (Annisaa:59).

May Allah bless you and me with the ability to implement the Holy Quran and the Sunna of His Messenger Muhammad (pbuh). I say this and pray to Allah, the Almighty, to grant us forgiveness. Supplicate to Allah for forgiveness for He is the Most Forgiving and the Most Merciful.

Second sermon

Praise be to Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah, having no associates. I also bear witness that our Master Muhammad is His servant and messenger, who was true to his promise. May the peace and the  blessings of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, his companions and all those who will follow them in righteousness till the Day of Judgment.

Dear Believers,

Please fear Allah and know that the true preparations for this month should not be by stocking up heaps of food, goods and drinks. Rather they should be through a resolute determination to engage in all that can help us get closer to Allah. Indeed Islam has taught us how to use resources rationally, avoid purchasing things that exceed our needs, and focus on the necessities that help us in our fast.

The rush to buy and store supplies of food for Ramadan is contrary to the goals of this blessed month. We should always remind ourselves that Ramadan is for fasting during the day and standing for prayer at night. So let us be moderate in our consumption, teach ourselves how to control our senses and make them respond to acts of worship.  Allah, Glory be to Him, says, "and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess." (Al Aaraf:31).

Dear Muslims,

Allah has commanded you an order to which He and His angels are both committed, when He says, "Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet: O ye that believe! Send ye blessings on him, and salute him with all respect." (Al Ahzab:56).

The Prophet (pbuh) said, "for everyone who invokes a blessing on me will receive ten blessings from Allah." May the peace and the  blessings of Allah be upon our Master Muhammad (pbuh), his family and all his companions. May Allah be pleased with the Rightly Guided Caliphs and all those who will follow them in righteousness till the Day of Judgment.

O Allah, with Your grace, grant us Your favour to reach the presence and the benefits of the holy month of Ramadan.   O Allah, we seek Your favour to let our hearts be full of Your gratitude and keep our tongue moist with Your remembrance. May Allah bless us with good provision, accepted work, beneficial knowledge, well-being in mind and body and blessed living life and progeny.

O Allah, increase Your blessings upon us and do not withhold Your provision from us, honour us and do not disgrace us, give us and do not deprive us,  advocate us and do not disfavour us. O Allah, bestow upon us Your satisfaction and grant us self-content. O Allah, make piety our pursuit, solidify our faith and increase our wisdom.

O Allah, we seek Your mercy and forgiveness.  We turn to You in repentance, put our hope and trust in You to guide us to do the righteous actions and accept our supplications to You. We also beseech You to confer on us safety from every sin, and booty of all righteousness, and to win Paradise and deliverance from the Hellfire.

O Allah, we implore You at this instant not to let a sin unforgiven, a distress unrelieved, an illness unhealed or a handicapped without relief, a dead without mercy or a debt unsettled. Our Lord! Grant us good in this world and good in the life to come and keep us safe from the torment of the Fire.

May Allah grant our leader HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and his Deputy, HH Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, success and provide strength and support to his brothers, Their Highness The Rulers of the Emirates, and his trustworthy Crown Prince HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

O Allah, forgive all of the Muslims, men and women, living and dead, and make blessings follow us and them. May Allah have mercy on Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Maktoum and all their brothers, the late UAE Sheikhs. O Lord, forgive and show mercy, You are the Ever Merciful and there is no strength nor power save with Allah, the High, the Great.

O Allah, grant the favour of Your forgiveness to whoever have donated a Waqf to benefit Your servants and bless the wealth of whoever have given Zakat. We beseech You to bestow Your forgiveness and great reward upon who built this mosque, his parents and anyone who have contributed to it with good deeds. O Allah, forgive anyone who built a mosque in which Your Name is remembered.

We pray to Allah, the Most Gracious, to continue blessing the UAE and all Muslim countries with safety and security.

O Servants of Allah, Remember Allah and He will Remember you. Be grateful for His benevolence He will increase His blessings to you. Allah, the Most High, says, "And establish regular Prayer: for Prayer restrains from shameful and unjust deeds; and remembrance of Allah is the greatest (thing in life) without doubt. And Allah knows the (deeds) that ye do." (Al Ankaboot:45).

May Allah bless you with true success of this world as well as of the hereafter!

(part 6)

A Time With Halimah

Like many other women in Mecca, Aminah decided to send her son away from the city for his early years to the desert where it was more healthy. Women from the desert used to come to Mecca to collect the new babies and they would then keep them until they developed into strong children, for which they were well paid by the parents.

Among the women who traveled to Mecca to fetch a new baby at the time Aminah's son was born, was a Bedouin woman called Halimah. With her was her husband and baby son. They had always been very poor but this year things were harder than ever because there had been famine. The donkey that earned Halimah on the journey was so weak from hunger that he often stumbled. Halimah's own baby son cried all the time because his mother could not feed him properly. Even their she-camel did not give them one drop of milk. Halimah did not know what to do. She thought to herself, 'How can I possibly feed another baby when I haven't got enough milk even for my own son?'

At last they reached Mecca. All the other women of the tribe to which Halimah belonged, the Bani Sa'd, found a child to take back with them, but not Halimah. The only baby left was Muhammad (pbuh). Usually the father paid the wet-nurse but Mohammed's father was dead. So no one wanted to take him, even though he was from one of the noblest families of Quraysh. Halimah did not want to take him either, but she also did not want to be the only woman to go back to her tribe without a baby to bring up.

She asked her husband whether she should take Muhammad (pbuh) or not. He advised her to do so, adding, 'Perhaps Allah will bless us because of him.' They started on the return journey and as soon as Halimah began to feed Muhammad (pbuh) . Her milk suddenly increased and she had enough for him as well as her baby son. When they were back home, everything began to change.

The land became green, and the date trees, one of their main sources of food, gave lots of fruit. Even the sheep and their old she-camel began to give plenty of milk.
Halimah and her husband knew that this good fortune had come because they had the new baby, Muhammad (pbuh), whom they had come to love as if he were their own son.

When Muhammad (pbuh) was two years old, Halimah took him back to his mother. She pleaded with Aminah, however, to let her keep him for a little longer, and to her great joy the mother agreed. During this time with Halimah's family in the desert, Muhammad (pbuh) played with her children and together they would take the sheep out to graze. At other times, however, Halimah would often find him sitting alone.

It is during this one occasion, two angels came to Muhammad (pbuh) and washed his heart with water. In this way Allah made his heart pure for He intended Muhammad (pbuh) to be greater than any man ever born and to become the Seal of the Prophets.

In the Name of Allah the Beneficent, the Merciful
"Did We not expand thy breast for thee And eased thee of thy burden Which weighed down thy back; And exalted thy fame? So truly with hardship comes ease, Truly with hardship comes ease. So when thou art relieved, still toil And strive to please thy Lord.
(Quran xciv.1-8)

When Halimah finally took Muhammad (pbuh) back to Aminah, he was a healthy, strong boy. Later he would look back with joy on the time he had spent with Halimah, and he always thought of himself as one of the Bani Sa'd.

{Islamic Mailing Group} Is moonsighting essential?

Is it essential for the people to sight the new moon of Ramadaan?.

Praise be to Allaah.

The majority of scholars are of the view that sighting the new moon of Ramadaan on the first night of the month is a communal obligation, and if all the people fail to do it then they are sinning. This is also the Hanafi view.

Some of the fuqaha' were of the view that moon sighting is mustahabb.

It says in Majma' al-Anhaar (1/283): It is a communal obligation for the people to seek the new moon on the evening of the twenty-ninth of Sha'baan or Ramadaan, and also of Dhu'l-Qa'dah, and it is obligatory for the ruler to enjoin the people to do that.

It says in al-Fataawa al-Hindiyyah (1/197): It is obligatory for the people to seek the new moon on the twenty-ninth of Sha'baan at the time of sunset, and if they see it they must fast. If it is cloudy then they must complete the month as thirty days. End quote.

See: Fath al-Qadeer (2/313).

It says in Kashshaaf al-Qinaa' (2/300): It is mustahabb for the people on the night before the thirtieth of Sha'baan to sight the new moon of Ramadaan.

It is mustahabb to sight the new moon so as to be on the safe side with regard to fasting and so as to avoid disputes. It was narrated that 'Aa'ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to count the days in Sha'baan more carefully than at any other time, then he would fast when he sighted (the new moon) of Ramadaan. Narrated by al-Daaraqutni with a saheeh isnaad.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah in a marfoo' report: "Count the days of Sha'baan for the sake of Ramadaan." Narrated by al-Tirmidhi. End quote.

This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi (678).

It says in Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi: Ibn Hajar (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: They should strive to count its days accurately, and that is by means of watching the waxing and waning of the moon, so that they will be certain  of when to expect the new moon of Ramadaan and will not miss any of it. End quote.

In al-Mawsoo'ah al-Fiqhiyyah (22/23) it says: Sighting the new moon is something that is decreed by the fact that some acts of worship are connected to specific times. It is prescribed for the Muslims to strive in seeking it and it is more important on the night before the thirtieth of Sha'baan, in order to find out whether Ramadaan has begun, and on the night before the thirtieth of Ramadaan in order to find out whether the month has ended and Shawwaal has begun, and on the night before the thirtieth of Dhu'l-Qa'dah to find out if Dhu'l-Hijjah has begun. These three months have to do with two of the pillars of Islam, namely fasting and Hajj, and the setting of the dates for 'Eid al-Fitr and 'Eid al-Adha.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) encouraged seeking the sighting of the moon. It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Fast when you see it and break the fast when you see it, and if it is too cloudy then complete the number (of days) of Sha'baan as thirty." And it was narrated from 'Abd-Allaah ibn 'Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "The month is twenty-nine days, so do not fast until you see it, and if it is cloudy then complete the month as thirty days." The first hadeeth enjoins fasting the month of Ramadaan when its new moon is sighted or when the month of Sha'baan is completed with thirty days, and it enjoins ending the fast when the new moon of Shawwaal is sighted, or when Ramadaan is completed with thirty days. The second hadeeth forbids fasting Ramadaan before the new moon is sighted or before Sha'baan has been completed if it is cloudy.

And there is a hadeeth narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in which he enjoined paying attention to the new moon of Sha'baan because of Ramadaan. He said: "Count the days of Sha'baan carefully for the sake of Ramadaan." This hadeeth shows the importance of paying attention to the month of Sha'baan in order to work out when Ramadaan starts. It was narrated from 'Aa'ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to count the days in Sha'baan more carefully than at any other time, then he would fast when he sighted (the new moon) of Ramadaan, and if it was cloudy he would count thirty days and then fast.

The commentators said: i.e., he would make sure to count the days of Sha'baan carefully in order to begin the fast of Ramadaan at the right time. During the lifetime of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and after he died, the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) were concerned with sighting the new moon of Ramadaan and they used to look for it. It was narrated that 'Abd-Allaah ibn 'Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The people sighted the new moon and I told the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) about that, and he fasted and told the people to fast.

It was narrated that Anas ibn Maalik (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: We were with 'Umar between Makkah and Madeenah and we looked for the new moon. I was a man who had keen eyesight and I sighted it, but no one else claimed that he had seen it except me. I started saying to 'Umar: Do you not see it? And he could not see it.

The Hanafis regard sighting the new moon of Ramadaan on the night before the thirtieth of Sha'baan as a communal obligation, and if they sight it they should fast, otherwise they should complete the month (as thirty days) and then fast, because that which is essential to performance of an obligatory duty is also obligatory.

The Hanbalis say that it is mustahabb to sight the new moons so as to be on the safe side with regard to fasting and so as to avoid disputes. We did not find any clear view from the Maalikis and Shaafa'is on this issue. End quote.

Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked: Are all the Muslims sinning if none of them sights the new moon at the beginning or end of Ramadaan?

He replied: Sighting the new moon of Ramadaan or Shawaal is something that was established at the time of the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them), because Ibn 'Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The people looked for the new moon and I told the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) that I had seen it,so he fasted and told the people to fast.

Undoubtedly the way of the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) is the best and most complete guidance. End quote from 48 Su'aalan fi'l-Sawm, no. 21.

So it seems that sighting the new moon of Ramadaan, Shawwaal and Dhu'l-Hijjah is a communal obligation, because it is connected to two of the pillars of Islam: fasting and Hajj.

And Allaah knows best..
