{Islamic Mailing Group} Angels came to listen to the Qur'aan recitation of this proficient Sahabi!

One night, Usayd ibn Hudayr (radhi allahu anhu) was reciting the Qur'an in his enclosure, when the horse began to jump about.

He recited for a second time, and the horse leaped as before.

He recited once more, and the horse jumped about yet again..

Usaid ibn Hudayr relates, "I was afraid, lest the horse should trample (my son,) Yahya, and so I stood near it. Over my head, I then saw something like a canopy with what seemed to contain lamps in it -- rising up in the sky until it disappeared."

The next day, Usayd (radhi allahu anhu) went to the Messenger of Allah, and related the incident.

Upon hearing, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) remarked, "You should have continued your recitation, Ibn Hudair."

Ibn Hudair replied, "I recited. It jumped."

The Messenger of Allah repeated, "You should have continued, Ibn Hudair."

Ibn Hudair emphasized, "I recited, and it jumped again."

The Messenger of Allah insisted, "You should have carried on with your recitation, Ibn Hudair."

Ibn Hudair explained, "(O Messenger of Allah,) I finished (the recitation) because Yahya was near (the horse), and I was afraid lest it should trample him."

He added, "I saw something like a canopy with what seemed to be lamps in it rising up in the sky till it disappeared."

Upon this, the Messenger of Allah said, "Those were Angels, who were listening to your recitation; and if you had continued, the people would have seen them in the morning, and they (the Angels) would not have concealed themselves from the people."

See, Saheeh al-Bukhare 4/1742

- This incident is considered a karaamah of Usayd ibn Hudayr (radhi allahu anhu).
