[PF:169903] Nisab of Sadqa-Fitre (types of payments)

Every Muslim is required to pay Zakat al Fitr at the conclusion of the month of Ramadan as a token of thankfulness to Allah for having enabled him or her to observe the obligator fast.

Charity of the month in Islam: Sadaqat-ul-fitr (Fitra):

The word combinations "Zakat al Fitr" and "Sadaqatul Fitr" are different names of an obligatory kind of Zakah that is paid in the month of Ramadan immediately after its end.

Zakat al Fitr

Sadaqatul Fitr is the tax of fast-breaking which is paid by every member of the family before the beginning of the Eid prayer. . It is obligatory both for adults and children. The payment of this tax is the final condition so that God the Most High accepts the fast of a fasting person. This payment is made first of all to the needy and poor Muslims who are eligible for this tax and this payment is also used for other charity purposes.

Significance and Amount of Zakat Fitr (Fitra/ fitrana):

The main purpose of Zakat el fitre (Sadaqat-ul-fitr) is to provide those who fasted with the means of making up for their errors during the month of fasting. Zakat ul Fitr also provides the poor with a means with which they can celebrate the festival of breaking the fast (Eid ul Fitr) along with the rest of the Muslims.  This kind of Zakah became obligatory in the second year of Hijrah.

It is a Sunnah that the Sadaqat-ul-fitr (Zakat al Fitr) is paid before performing the 'Eid prayer. It can also be paid before the 'Eid day, but it is not advisable to delay it up to the performance of Eid prayer. However, if a person has failed to pay on its proper time, he should pay it as soon as possible, whereby the obligation will stand discharged.

Zakat Fitr, an obligation for every Muslim, who possess the Nisab (a minimum amount of wealth: 613.35 grams of silver or its equivalent, either in the form of money, ornaments, stock-in-trade, or in the form of some goods or commodities beyond one's normal needs). It must be paid before Eid-ul-Fitr i.e. before the end of Ramadan.

Every person who owns such an amount has to pay Sadaqat-ul-fitr, not only on behalf of himself but also on behalf of his minor children. The prescribed amount of Sadaqat-ul-fitr is 1.75 Kilograms of wheat or its value in money.

Importance of Zakat ul fitr and Fitra Payment in Islam:

The importance of Zakat Fitr are expressed in the following hadith transmitted by Ibn 'Abbas: "Prophet Muhammad (may Allah greet and bless him) made obligatory the payment of Zakat al Fitr for the sake of the purification of a fasting person from empty or blunt words which he said to somebody, and as a source of nutrition for the needy [as a kind of support, help to them]. If a man carries out this duty [transmits or pays this alms in time] before the festive prayer, his action will be accepted as a Zakah [one of the kinds of the obligatory alms which, with God's mercy, will be accepted by Him], whereas if he performs this duty after the Prayer, it will be equal to alms which man regularly gives".

Hadrat Ibn Umar (Radi Allahu ta'ala anhu) narrates : The Most Beloved Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa aalihi wa Sallam) stated Sadaqat al-Fitr to be Waajib (compulsory). He (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa aalihi wa Sallam) said, " The Fast of Ramadan remains suspended between the earth and the sky and it is only Sadaqat al-Fitr that takes it up.
