Hazrat Ali KarramAllaho wajhahu had no other choice except to burn Ibn Saba for the severity of the ittiham being Allah to Hazrat Ali and he did it. Didn't Hazrat Ali RaziAllaho A'nhu know this ruling by Rasoolullah Sallallaho A'laihi Wa Sallam not to punish the makhlooq by burning?? He knew it but Ibn Saba deserved the harshest and it was burning administered by the Caliph himself. So there should be no resentment on this punishment from any corner.

No doubt, I would have killed them, for the Prophet said, 'If somebody (a Muslim) discards his religion, kill him.' "

Narrated Abu Huraira (Radi Allah Anhu): I heard Allah's Messenger saying, "An ant bit a Prophet amongst the Prophets, and he ordered that the place of ants be burnt. So, Allah inspired to him, 'It is because one ant bit you that you burnt a nation amongst the nations of that glorify Allah?' "
