Expats launch anti-dowry campaign

JEDDAH: ARAB NEWS

Monday 18 June 2012

Over 25 founder members of the anti-dowry campaign established by the Socio Reforms Society, Jeddah Chapter, pledged never to attend any marriage where the expenses are imposed on the bride's parents. The members included Dr. Haroon Sayeed, Saleem Farooqui, Abdul Qader Warangali, Muhammad Abbas Khan, Sayeeduddin president SIBN, Abdul Razzaq, Sikander Ali and Dilshad Ahmed.

Members of various social and educational organizations extended full support to the campaign.

In Islam dowry is the bride price (mehr) that the man has to pay to the woman. But in the subcontinent, the practice is in reverse with the woman's family being burdened with demands from the man's family before marriage.

The function held at Shadab Restaurant recently was addressed by Aleem Khan Falaki. He said boycott of these marriages is the first step toward the eradication of the dowry system. He emphasized that the dowry system is the worst violation of Islamic ethics, human rights and women's rights. The dowry system destroys the economic and moral fabric of the society, he stressed.

Though fathers and brothers have to spend most of their lives savings for the marriages of their daughters or sisters and consequently suffer throughout life, Falaki said, "Unfortunately, the person who has endured the suffering continues to perpetuate this suffering by making others suffer by seeking dowry for their sons or brothers. Thus a vicious cycle encircles the society pushing people toward poverty."

He said a dinner party hosted by the bride's family on the first day has become compulsory, increasing the burden. This is totally un-Islamic and unethical.
Falaki said unless we start boycotting such dinners and dowry-related parties, people would not realize the importance of the issue. To make the people realize the dowry's evil everyone must act.

Sayeeduddin praised the Arabs, particularly of Saudi Arabia, and their system of marriage and suggested subcontinent people to follow their example. The system in Saudi Arabia is that nikah (marriage agreement) takes place in the court then the groom gives the Walima dinner on the day of departure of the bride to the new home.
Dr. Haroon said that the campaign will be launched among youths and bachelors. The campaign hopes to increase the number of the pledge takers in Jeddah, before taking the campaign Kingdomwide.

Abdul Razzaq, catering manager at Jeddah Clinic, said that those who sign the pledge must publicize their participation in order to make aware their stance on such marriages.

Saleem Farooqui, social activist, said pamphlets, booklets and corner meetings will be organized to spread awareness. He stressed the need for support from scholars and political leaders to eradicate the dowry system.

Hafez Sheikh Hussain of Jama Nizamiya said helping poor girls pay dowry strengthens the dowry system and makes men to continue taking dowry, while calling on people to support boys to pay the mehr.

Imdad Ali said qazis, who wield influence, must be approached to change the system of the dowry.
