The Messenger (Muhammad sallallaahu alayhe wa sallam) believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and (so do) the believers. Each one believes in Allaah, His Angels, His Books,..(2:285)

All praise is for Allaah, Lord of all the Worlds, who ordered us to follow His Messenger (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) and to call to His Way, and may Allaah send praises and blessings of peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family, his Companions, and those who truly follow them until the Day of Judgment.

aqidah linguistically is derived from the term "aqad" which means tying, knotting, holding together or making firm. If one says, "Aqadtu such and such," it means his heart is firm upon such and such. Therefore, al-aqidah or al-itiqad means a firm creed that one's heart is fixed upon without any wavering or doubt. It excludes any supposition, doubt or suspicion.

When the Scholars, use the word aqidah they are referring to the aqidah of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah, the Creed of the best three generations of the Sahaba, the Tabieen, Tab Tabieen and those who followed them in the truth, it even refers to all those matters of knowledge which have been transmitted in authentic reports, it's the root of Deen, without its correctness a person is lost and confused.

Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhe wa sallam), was very much concerned throughout his life with strengthening it in the hearts of his companions so that their Deen would be built on solid foundation.

Allaah, The Almighty, outlined the basics of Islamic aqidah saying :

آمَنَ الرَّسُولُ بِمَا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْهِ مِن رَّبِّهِ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۚ كُلٌّ آمَنَ بِاللَّهِ وَمَلَائِكَتِهِ وَكُتُبِهِ

The Messenger (Muhammad sallallaahu alayhe wa sallam) believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and (so do) the believers. Each one believes in Allaah, His Angels, His Books,..(2:285)

The heart of a believer must be firm on the "pillars" of Eman (faith). What is required is- knowing, understanding, submitting and implementing. In the famous Hadith of Gabriel, the Prophet answered, when he was asked, "What is Eman?" he said, "To believe in Allaah and His angels and His books and His messengers and the Last Day and predestination of good and evil." refer : Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim

Knowing sound aqidah is the first obligation upon every Muslim .

Shaykh al-Islam al-Haruwi al-Ansari (d. 481 AH) (may Allah have mercy on him) stated at the beginning of his book, Itiqaad ahl al-Sunnah, "The first obligation upon the slave is the knowledge of Allaah. This is proven by the hadith of Muadh, when the Prophet said to him, 'You will come to a people from the People (sallallaahu alayhe wa sallam) of the Book. The first thing that you should call them to is the worship of Allah, If they gain the knowledge of Allah, then tell them that Allah obligates upon them five prayers during the day and night…"

To attaining this vital knowledge one has to refer the Book (Quran), authentic Sunnah and methodology of Salaf.

Let's Start From Basic Books :

Aqeedah Comes First! - troid.ca - By Shaykh Saalih Ibn Fawzaan al-Fawzaan

The Authentic Creed And the Invalidators of Islam - by Shaik Ibn Baaz [PDF] The most important matter for every Muslim is the correctness of his beliefs. Islam established on the basis of sound creed and it opposes all false superstitions and erroneous systems of belief. Thus, it is essential for every Muslim to make certain that his belief are correct and in accordance with the Quran and authentic Sunnah of the Prophet (S). This small but important book covers all basic information. Contents: Belief in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Last Day, & in the Divine Destiny, and Invalidators of Islam.

200 Frequently Asked Questions on Aqeedah - Sheikh Hafiz Al-Hakamy [PDF] From Author: This is a summarized book which I hope to be of great benefit to the reader. This book includes the basics of religion and principles of Islamic Monotheism. It shows the Straight Path of the True Religion (Islam). It covers what follows: Iman (Faith), its characteristics and what nullifies or demolishes it. Each statement is supported by clear-cut proofs. I focused on the views of the People of the Sunnah and discarded those of the heretics and deviators from the Straight Path. I mentioned the latter's only when I intended to refute and knock them down. I organized it in the form of questions and answers to draw the attention of the kind reader.
