Smile for the camera! iPhone app iGotYa snaps thief and emails picture to owner after mugger enters incorrect passcode

An iPhone thief has been captured on camera after unintentionally setting off crime-busting photo app iGotYa, which had been installed on the smartphone.

The clued-up owner, a 31-year-old woman whose named has not been released, is a step closer to being reunited with her cell, after it automatically emailed a clear picture of the mugger to her.

The man, who snatched the black iPhone from the woman's pocket after bumping into her on a New York street, is now being chased by police after he triggered the app by entering the wrong passcode.

The woman recognised the shaven-headed man in the photo as the one who robbed her and passed the details on to police.

Cops released the photo on Tuesday and describe the suspect as Hispanic, in his 20s and about 5'8" with short, dark hair and an earring in his left ear.

iGotYa is a third-party app, made by Cyndia, which is not available in the official Apple store.

It is an alternative to Apple's free Find My iPhone software, which shows a stolen phone's approximate location on a map but does not take a picture of its illegal user.

iGotYa requires people 'jailbreak' their iPhones to override Apple's built-in ban on competitors' software.

The technique was legalised last year when the Library of Congress ruled that the practice does not violate copyright laws.

Apple maintains that using third-party software on its devices is a little dangerous.

A high-ranking police source told the New York Daily News that victims should not cancel their service if their smartphone is stolen.

'If the phone is left on, their are a lot of ways we can track these people down,' he said of iPhone thieves. 'We can get a subpoena to track the phone.'

Robbers often ship iPhones to the Dominican Republic, where they can sell for $1500, the source told the paper.

'If they made a couple of phone calls, we can see who they called and we can identify them,' he added.
