[karachi-Friends] WHO BLINKED?

Rob Crilly reporting in the Telegraph suggested that US has been
steadily walking away from Admiral Mullen's wild and crazy accusations
on the eve of his retirement. In fact, one day later he himself toned
down his rhetoric and said Pakistan was essential for peace in
Afghanistan. Mr. Karzai stung by the assassination of Mr. Rabbani also
said the same.

In a surprising turn of events–a BBC report
(http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-15143513) quoted Afghan
insurgent leader Siraj Haqqani as saying he's been approached by the
US to join the Afghan government and he denied that his militant group
was behind the killing of the top Afghan peace envoy.

"Right from the first day of American arrival till this day not only
Pakistani but other Islamic and other non-Islamic countries including
America, contacted us and they (are) still doing so. They are asking
us to leave the ranks of Islamic Emirates," Sirajudding Haqqani
He said that they promised him an "important role in the government of
Afghanistan."
Mr Haqqani said the "Islamic Emirate" was behind "the attack on the US
embassy, Nato headquarters and other attacks" in Kabul, which he said
were ordered by a "military council" and were not the work of
individuals.
"The [US] mood has changed against the Haqqanis… It is not that the
talks with the Haqqanis are like the talks with the mainstream
Taliban, which I think are genuine and more constructive talks, "
Ahmed Rashid tells the BBC.
"In every operation we get the order, planning and financial resources
from the Emirate's leadership and we act accordingly." Mr Haqqani
Crilly mimics what most other independent analysts have been saying
for the past few weeks–"However, with relations between the two
countries close to breaking point, the US appeared to row back with a
series of statements emphasising the importance of the alliance. On
Friday, President Barack Obama made a point of not endorsing Adml
Mullen's accusations. He admitted that the intelligence was not clear
on the exact nature of the relationship between the ISI and the
Haqqanis. The reversal has been greeted with glee in Islamabad…The
climb-down also suggests the US knew it had few options to increase
pressure, without risking a total breakdown in relations and the
deployment of American forces to Pakistan".

PM Yousuf Raza Gilani said Pakistan's political parties had united to
face down the US."It is the victory of Pakistani nation, political
parties as well as the government's policy of reconciliation."

"It is due to APC as well as the unity of Pakistan's political leaders
that the US has a sent a message that they need Pakistan and that they
cannot win the war without Pakistan," he said. "They have also
distanced themselves from the statement of Mullen."

Bruce Riedel, a former CIA officer and a fellow at the Brookings
Institution think tank realizes that the Mullen bluster could not be
backup up with actionable items against a Nuclear powered Paksitan."US
options are limited as we don't want a larger war in south Asia."

Afghan President Karzai is again headed to Delhi to try out his luck
there. Some joke that he is on a house hunting trip. It is an exercise
in futility, but Mr. Karzai has few options left, and he will need to
find a place to live after his term as "Mayor of Kabul" end. The
Boston Globe reports that "Afghanistan's president says Pakistan has
not lived up to its promises to help end the Taliban-led insurgency,
but that he hopes the two countries can work together like brothers".
