Very Sad news - Jagjit Singh Sahab passed away earleir today in Mumbai.(He had undergone two major surgeries at Lilavati, Bandra, one of India'stop hospitals - due to stroke/brain haemrrohaging, last Friday)
This is a great loss and a blow for all who enjoyed his music as well as those who have appreciation for the literary side of the Urdu language. He was the last great proponent of the Urdu language itself and shaeri in India.
He did his best to promote Urdu, even by spending his own money.The Indian polity does not seem to have much room for Urdu and it seems tobe on the decline in India.
We have all heard these stories over the year sbut I experienced it first hand myself, on my trip to India overDecember/January 2011. Perhaps, the only exception is Hyderabad where they have their own brand of Urdu (unlike the generally accepted idea of the purest form being that of Lucknaw and some parts of UP).
With the exception of its presence in the cultured homes and families of UP and elsewhere (Hindustani/Urdu among both Hindu and Muslim families), it is not apparent any more among the general public in the former Urdu-speaking areas.
Jagjit sahab's passing is therefore an added loss indeed, for all who value the richness and cultural heritage of this great language, evenfor one like myself, whose primary languages are English and Gujarati.
