[PF:165310] Fuel Disappears from Gas Stations All Across The Country!!

The petrol stations at highways and in small towns of northern Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are running dry as supply of petrol and diesel has been stopped for the last more than two weeks.

With petrol and diesel shortages running into the dangerous level for almost a week, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) finally issued show cause notices to the oil companies on Tuesday asking them to resolve the issue and improve the stocks.

The supplies have been hit in the northern part of the country due to annul shutdown of Attock Refinery (ARL), which is the key supplier of petrol, diesel and other fuels in the region.

While the petroleum dealers have registered a complaint with Ogra over the fuel shortages and also said that there could be an intentional move to create fuel shortages in the country by the oil refineries.

"It is something fishy as the refineries have adequate stocks of almost 20 days and the maintenance work is generally completed within 22 days," said Chaudhri Zafar Elahi, Chairman All Pakistan petroleum Dealers Association, Northern Zone.

He said that ARL had been closed for maintenance from May 17.

The oil companies have managed to maintain supplies to some selected places in Rawalpindi and the federal capital but vast majority of the pumps in northern Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa almost ran dry due to limited or negligible supply.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) ARL Adil Khatak, said that the plant is shut due to maintenance purpose.

"ARL produces 28000 tons petrol per month to meet 15 per cent of total country`s requirements," Khatak said adding that `we have informed the Ministry of Petroleum about this in product review meeting. He said that government would arrange products from Parco and some through imports to meet country requirements. Dawn

Talking to an Ogra official said that action had been initiated as the stocks declined to an alarming level.

However, the action taken by Ogra comes almost two weeks after the directives of Ministry of Petroleum (MoP) to initiate action against the Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) failing to build up petroleum stocks for 20 days.

The ministry had written to Ogra on May 25, 2011 to ensure stocks built-up, as the OMCs are bound to maintain fuel stocks to meet country`s requirements for 20 days.
