National Seminar on

24 & 25 October 2013

Dear Friend,

The Department of Arabic, University of Kerala, is organizing a two day National Seminar on Society, Culture and Politics in West Asia: Post-Arab Spring Dynamics on 24 & 25 October 2013 at the Senate Chamber, University of Kerala, Thiruvanathapuram. Eminent scholars from India and abroad are expected to attend the seminar.

Teachers, Writers, Research Scholars and Students from all over the country are invited to participate and present papers in the Seminar.

A Brief Note on the Theme

Over the last few decades, the scope of West Asian studies has transcended the disciplinary borders and gained currency beyond the confines of Area Studies. It now offers a rallying point for many disciplines including history, politics, theology, literature and international relations that collectively contribute to re-portray the discipline's apocryphal image as one that is often pitched in terms of geo-political and the strategic studies.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that the contemporary World politics is being mediated by the currents in the south east of the Mediterranean. Though Arab-Islamic society, once functioned as the driving force of the world civilization, subsequently lost its position, it continues to play a decisive role, if the present events can be taken as indicators.

The region has witnessed a series of diverse yet shared movements that affected the social relations, economic exchanges, political institutions and regional geo-political setting. Disintegration of Soviet Union and resultant re-orientation of regional politics, end of cold war era, neo-liberal re-configuration of Arab economies, political reforms in the monarchic regimes, newfound popularity of Islamic political activism, Gulf War, War on Terror and Arab Spring and the fall of despotic regimes-all add to a long array of events that offered fundamental components for a new West Asia to emerge. Perhaps more striking is the newfound popularity of new media that represents new communication genre for variety of purposes like political mobilization and opinion building.

The awakening that led to a democratic revolution in the heart lands of Arab world is now swiftly moving towards more confused and uncertain situation. The ebb and flow of the Arab Spring is revealing political storms that could flood the Arab world with chaos and confusions. The movement gets pushed from the central position to peripheries exposing its inability to withstand the challenges.

It is in the backdrop of these developments, Kerala University is organizing a seminar with the purpose of addressing a wide variety of issues that characterize society, culture and politics in the contemporary Arab World. This seminar draws works from multiple disciplinary vantage points in order to record the change and dynamism in their entireties.
