Dear

The 7th Annual Three-Day Workshop on "STRUCTURING INNOVATIVE ISLAMIC FINANCIAL PRODUCTS" by the Institute of Islamic Banking and Insurance (IIBI) is being held in London from Friday, 14 June to Sunday, 16 June 2013. This workshop is supported by AAOIFI Bahrain, ISRA Malaysia and the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment (CISI) UK and hosted by Ernst & Young UK, a global leader in assurance, tax, transactions and advisory services.

The Islamic finance industry (IFI) has grown very substantially and visibly in recent years and continues to grow. A key tool that Islamic banks have sought to use as part of their development and growth is innovation in structuring new Islamic financial products for modern markets based on traditional commercial contracts. However, a particular concern that has been widely expressed is that financial products developed by Islamic banks are modelled very closely after those offered by the interest-based conventional banking industry (CBI), so much so that the difference between them is often not clear - raising the important question as to how exactly, if at all, does the IFI provide a 'meaningful' alternative and tangible value-addition vis-a-vis the CBI?

This IIBI three-day workshop in London will focus on product structuring and innovation with particular emphasis on understanding the central role of Shari'ah objectives relating to ethics and moral responsibility in financial transactions and other dealings.  The workshop will revisit the foundations of Islamic finance, as well as cover in detail the principal contracts, core products and best practice governing the structuring of Islamic financial products. The use of case studies and group activity will provide some practical experience and would also encourage a healthy exchange of ideas among participants.

Whilst pressure is increasing for Islamic banks to innovate,  a rigorous, disciplined approach is necessary at all times to ensure that the basis of the innovation used and its methodology  must always fulfil Shari'ah ethical and moral requirements.

The workshop fee is £1,090 and has deliberately been kept as low as possible in order to encourage wide participation. A reduction will be considered for groups of more than three participants. You may confirm your place for the workshop by registering and paying the requisite course fee online.

Please note that the fee does not include accommodation and those registering to attend may approach IIBI for assistance in locating suitable hotel accommodation.

Please feel free to circulate the information about this workshop among your colleagues and friends, or other persons in your network who may be interested to attend.

Thank you.
