Hartal called by Jamaat observed throughout the country despite opposition
from Shahbagh activists, Government and police obstruction : No small
achievement for them

Daily Amar Desh, daily Naya Diganta have reported that the work
shutdown or Hartal was observed throughout the country .At least three
people were killed, dozens of vehicles smashed, and more than 100
workes of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami
Chhatra Shibir were arrested during Monday’s country-wide dawn-to-dusk
hartal called by the party.

Daily new Age says that unlike recent hartals, only a small number of
Jamaat-Shibir men were seen picketing in the capital while a good many
shops and businesses remained open. Md Ibrahim, 28, was shot dead in
police firing at Chouddagram in Comilla.
Jamaat called the general shutdown after three of its activists had
been killed in a clash with the Cox’s Bazar police on February 15.
Shortly after the announcement of the hartal, the youth who had been
demonstrating since February 5 at Shahbagh Square in demand of death
sentence of all perpetrators of crimes against humanity during the
independence war made a general call to the people to defy the hartal
by keeping open schools, shops, and business houses and plying vehicles
on roads.According to New Age ,the number of vehicles on the city
streets was higher than that seen on previous hartal days, although no
inter-district bus operated.
Unlike the recent hartal days, a large number of makeshift shops were
open, but most of the shopping complexes were closed.
Pickets took out sudden processions in different city areas, but the
police dispersed them by firing rubber bullets.
Pickets damaged human haulers, exploded a number of crude bombs known
as cocktails, and tried to put junk tyres on fire in the city’s
Nabisco, Mahakhali,

Indira Road

, Kakrail, and Jatrabari areas.
Anti-hartal activists, mostly belonging to the ruling Awami League,
took out processions from different city areas as elsewhere in the
country.
No long-distance buses left the inter-district bus terminal at Gabtali
during the hartal hours while a large number of short-route buses were
seen plying for different distances.
We are not for Hartal on principle but we admit that Hartal has become
a legal tool of political protest. All accounts taken, the Hartal or
shut down of work was successful.Jamaat could do it despite strong
opposition from Shahbagh activists, Home Minister , Awami League and
Police.
