The prophets who came before Muhammad (PBUH) were sent specifically for the nations for whom they were sent. Moses (PBUH) came to children of Israel to emancipate them from the yoke of Pharaoh. Jesus Christ came to retrieve the lost sheep of children of Israel. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the only prophet who was sent to the entire humanity as has been described in the holy Quran:
21:107 We sent thee not, but as a Mercy for all creatures.
He started his mission from Makkah and gradually spread it to entire Arabian peninsula; A land mass of 1.2 sq. million miles. He invited kings of Egypt, Ethiopia, Syria and Iran towards Islam. During his life time his message reached Afghanistan and India. And his caliphs took it as far as China, Indonesia and Turkey. He took no time to implement the code of conduct sent down to him in the land under his control. He established rule of Sharia law in his jurisdiction. Everybody was equal in the eyes of law. He declared in his hajj sermon:
" O People ! You are from Adam and Eve. An Arab is no better than a non Arab except for piety and the non-Arab is no better than Arab save for piety."
He thus laid the foundation of a global state which was as much for blacks as it was for whites. The positions were given on merit and not on wealth or family background. Whose workers were motivated by reward in the hereinafter and not by earthly gains. Governance meant hard labor for them not luxurious life. Prophet (SAW) made education the responsibility of state. He asked people to take care of the poor by paying 2.5% of their wealth to the needy. Treatment of patients and pension of the old became responsibility of state. Soon a time came, as he predicted, that a lady travelled from one end of the peninsula to the other and she had no fear. Thus the wilderness mentioned in OT became a shining example of peace, equality and tranquility.
He offered his life as the role model for a ruler. He ruled hearts and minds rather than bodies. He lived a simple life despite being in control of vast territory. His wife says no 3 days passed when we got food continuously; if we ate two days, the third went foodless and if we got food one day, two went foodless. Sometimes months passed and there was no fire in kitchen. He thus lived like a hermit rather than like a lavish king.
Unlike other religions Islam is not a set of rituals. But it emphasizes on deeds and manners. One has to be kind and helpful to fellow humans and assist them in getting food. Man was not created as a silent spectator, but as a vice-regent of God on earth. He has to establish rule of code of conduct provided by Allah Almighty. Holy Quran says:
" You are the best nation that has been created for manind; you order good and forbid vice and believe in Allah".
So man has a role to play in this world. Those who strive for achieving purpose of their life, are assisted in this world and rewarded in the hereinafter. Those who are negligent and live like animals are ignored in this world and punished in the hereinafter. Islam is a belief system of hope and fear. Prophet Muahmmad (PBUH) has said:
" Fear of Allah is the basis of all wisdom ! ".
Islam accepts and recognizes earlier prophets like Abraham, Isac, Ishmael, Joseph, Moses, David, John and Jesus Christ and says sincere believers of these prophets will enter paradise. Unlike other belief systems, Islam does claim exclusive right to salvation. No wonder Muslims declare it as religion of peace!
