U.S. building Afghanistan a new $92 million
'Pentagon'<http://www.star- telegram. com/2012/ 07/01/4072462/ us-building- afghanistan- a-huge.html>
* 01 Jul 2012 The United States is spending *$92 million* to build
Afghanistan a new "Pentagon," a massive five-story military headquarters
with domed roofs and a high-tech basement command center that will link
Afghan generals with their troops. Even with American troops beginning
their withdrawal, the U.S. government is still working its way through a *$10
billion* menu of construction
projects<http://www.legitgov .org/essay_ southwell_ arming_the_ left_is_the_ time_now_ 102203.html>.
The United States is also building a *$54 million* Kabul headquarters for the Interior Ministry, which oversees the Afghan police, and a *$102 million
* base for the military's 201st Corps in eastern Afghanistan. [See also: *State

billion<http://www.usatoday .com/news/ military/ story/2012- 06-30/afghan- supply-route- extra-costs/ 55948946/ 1>
30 Jun 2012 Pakistan's refusal to let NATO access its ports and roads
into Afghanistan has cost the Pentagon more than *$2.1 billion* in extra transportation costs to move supplies and equipment in and out of the country. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told the Senate Appropriations Committee in mid-June that the closure of the Pakistani routes was costing the U.S. military about an extra $100 million per month. These new costs were disclosed in a Pentagon budget document - called the omnibus reprogramming request - sent to Congress on Friday.
*Pakistan secretly permitting lethal NATO supply via
air<http://www.legitgov .org/Pakistan- secretly- permitting- lethal-NATO- supply-air>
* 01 Jul 2012 In blatant disregard to foreign policy terms approved by
parliament this year, Pakistan has secretly allowed US-led Nato forces to use its airspace for transporting lethal supplies to Afghanistan, official sources revealed. It is not clear when the permission was granted but it is believed to be a stop-gap arrangement between Pakistan and the United States till they finalise a deal on the resumption of vital land routes for foreign forces in Afghanistan. But the move is likely to spark a strong public backlash in view of parliament's resolutions which state that Pakistan's territory, including its airspace, shall not be used for transportation of arms and ammunition to Afghanistan.

*. 02 Jul 2012 Britain's Supreme Court has taken up the case of a
29-year-old detainee held by American officials at an Afghan prison outside
Bagram air base. The two-day hearing in the case of Yunus Rahmatullah of
Pakistan is one of the first times a detainee from Parwan prison - a
sprawling, secretive Afghan detention complex built on the site of a former
Soviet airfield - has ever made his case in a civilian court.

*US Adds Forces in Persian Gulf, a Signal to
Iran<http://www.nytimes. com/2012/ 07/03/world/ middleeast/ us-adds-forces- in-persian- gulf-a-signal- to-iran.html>
* 03 Jul 2012 The United States has quietly moved significant military
reinforcements into the Persian Gulf to deter the Iranian military from any possible attempt to shut the Strait of Hormuz and to increase the number of fighter jets capable of striking deep into Iran if the standoff over its nuclear program escalates. The deployments are part of a long-planned effort to bolster the American military presence in the gulf region... The Navy has doubled the number of minesweepers assigned to the region, to eight vessels, in what military officers describe as a purely defensive move.

Iran<http://www.legitgov .org/IRGC- kicks-new- missile-drill- central-Iran>
* 02 Jul 2012 Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has begun its
latest missile exercise, named "The Great Prophet 7" in central Iran. The
drill is aimed at testing Iran's latest surface-to-surface missile
achievements and will run for three days in the central Iranian province of Semnan. Various long, medium and short-range missiles will target
"simulations of the transregional forces' airbases" in the northern Semnan desert, Commander of Iran's IRGC Aerospace Division Brigadier General Amir-Ali Hajizadeh said on Sunday.

*10,000 armed men enter Syria for civil
war<http://www.legitgov .org/10000- armed-men- enter-Syria- civil-war>
* 02 Jul 2012 An estimated 10,000 armed men equipped with
highly-sophisticate d weapons, including anti-tank missiles, have reportedly entered Syria to help fuel the unrest in the country, Press TV has learned. Informed sources in the Qusayr village in Homs say the terrorists crossed into Syria from the Lebanese border and that they have taken positions in the suburbs of the restive city. Meanwhile, Syrian forces are still tracking armed groups fighting against the government of President Bashar al-Assad across the country.

*US ramps up covert operations overseas:
Report<http://www.legitgov .org/US-ramps- covert-operation s-overseas- Report>
* 03 Jul 2012 Data released by the British not-for-profit news
organization, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, shows that the United States has ramped up its covert operations in Yemen, Pakistan, and Somalia, *killing scores of civilians*. According to a recent analysis, published by the London-based organization on Monday, the CIA assassination drone attacks continue to claim the lives of Muslims in Pakistan, despite Islamabad's repeated condemnation of such strikes against the Pakistani tribal areas. Washington claims that its airstrikes target militants crossing the border with Afghanistan, but local sources say civilians have been the main victims of the attacks.
