[PF:168496] Exclusive Universities for Muslim Women: why?

Exclusive Women Universities

The protagonists of modernism would dismiss this but the truth is that the co-ed colleges and universities adversely affect the boys and girls in many ways. The university going boys and girls are specially vulnerable because they are in an age group where the physical desires are strongest. The love affairs are common outcomes often resulting in distraction from studies and unhealthy social and sexual behaviours. The problem is compounded if the affairs do not end up in marriages. Broken hearts lead to severe kinds of psychological stresses that can run throughout the lives. It is therefore necessary that exclusive women universities should be floated.

As already said, there should be at least 150 Muslim universities in the country as soon as possible if the community has to keep pace with the others. With these numbers of universities, diversity assumes paramount importance. Out of these at least 4 Exclusive Women Universities should be at least in the 4 metropolitan cities of the country. The exclusive women's universities are essential for various reasons:

First, there is a need to diversify modes and avenues of education with as many institutions of different kinds as possible.

Second, even mere addition in the number of universities will have an impact on the socioeconomic conditions of Muslims, as every institution adds to work, and work is the pivot of economics. Educational institutions are important in this regard because they create the best kinds of mentally skilled workers, who will leave these institutions equipped enough to create or contribute new business institutions.

Third, these will go a long way in creating model institutions for women. Co-ed institutions are the product of the mindset which the forces of globalisation have pampered all over the world. This mindset is based on using the attraction between men and women to create and sustain demands, many of which lead to what I call Dangerous, Dirty or Negative Economics. Co-ed education has certainly led to degradation of morality especially because these institutions do not make any attempt to prevent this. Even co-ed institutions can maintain propriety if the conditions are congenial, but given the current scenario, any attempts to "police" morality attracts censure. Muslims being specially sensitive to these issues, they must try to establish universities exclusively for women so that they can become torch bearers for other institutions.

Fourth, with overwhelming majority of Muslims sensitive to the issues related to mixing of boys and girls, Muslim families will be in a better frame of mind in opting to send their daughters to higher educational centres. This will have a positive effect on the level of education among women including professionals of all kinds.

Fifth, more women professionals and teachers will be able to get employments in these universities as well as in other institutions.

Sixth, these universities can then be complimented by establishment of women's degree colleges in smaller cities, which can be affiliated to these universities.

Seventh, these universities can run some exclusive courses specifically suited to women with more emphasis on medical courses and academics including literature (Urdu, Arabic, English, Hindi, etc), moral studies, religious studies (including Applied Islamics as discussed before), education and family management. At a later stage, I have discussed the introduction of Islamic Counselling as a full-fledged professional course, and this course can be taught with great success to students of the women's universities. This is important because women too need counselling of various kinds and women Islamic counsellors are needed in big numbers.

Eighth, the aim of education is not and must not be merely to produce employees. Education should also be able to produce good human beings, particularly good parents and good house managers. This applies to men and women both but is even of greater importance for women. The universities must focus on such courses in which women can excel without disturbing their families. As I have suggested elsewhere, outsourcing of work to women staying at homes should be tried, and these women universities can take a lead in imparting the required skills to girls.
