September 20, 2011: UK British Cabinet Minister and Co-Chairman of the Conservative Party Sayeeda Warsi visited Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) on September 19, 2011 and announced an essay competition for students on the topic Religious Pluralism, claiming that the two winners of the competition would get to go to UK for a week. During her short visit to the Central University, the Baroness spoke about her humble working class background and her fairytale rise to a unique position of prominence in British politics.

Born in Dewsbury, West Riding of Yorkshire, in 1971, to Pakistani immigrant family, she was the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Dewsbury at the 2005 general election, becoming the first Muslim woman to be selected by the Conservatives. Her father who started life as a mill worker later on became a highly successful trader, operating a bed manufacturing company with a turnover of £2 million a year.

While addressing the gathering at JMI, Baroness Warsi, who studied law, said: "We should not think in terms of East and West and other such binaries and stereotypes as she herself is a living example of transcending and breaking through such essentialisms."

The Interactive session between Baroness Warsi and students and senior faculty members of JMI was chaired by Najeeb Jung, Vice Chancellor, claimed the media coordinator. The Baroness Warsi, who was defeated by 4,615 votes in the 2005 general election, had a free and frank Q&A session in which she encouraged those present to ask any question.

She fielded a wide range of questions from her personal background, political affiliations, British foreign policies, scope of academic collaboration with JMI, immigration policy and Indian subcontinent.

Baroness Warsi, who has been married twice once in December 2007 (and got divorce after 17 years of marriage) and 2009, is the third Minister to be a Muslim. The other two are Shahid Malik and Sadiq Khan. She is a first ever female Muslim to serve as a minister in the UK.

May Allah bless you with true success of this world as well as of the hereafter!
