Drought Relief Team Extend
Food Assistance to the
Affected Regions

Mogadishu (19/08/2011) – In the light of the widespread drought and food shortages that have hit much of the Somali population, the Drought Relief Team of Harakat Al-Shabaab Al-Mujahideen continue to extend their support to the tens of thousands of needy Muslims in the affected regions.

In Aala-Yaasir Camp, the Drought Relief Team yesterday distributed food to the thousands of residents streaming into the camp on a daily basis. Aala-Yaasir, established in May 2011 and financed by Harakat Al-Shabaab Al Mujahideen is located at KM 50, in Lower Shabeelle region. The camp is home to more than 20,000 people displaced mainly from drought-affected areas in Southern Somalia, particularly Lower Shabeelle, Bay, Bakool and as far as Gedo region.

Sheikh Sultan Muhammad Aala-Muhammad, the spokesman for the Drought Relief Team said:

'We have distributed food to a total of 4165 families in Aala-Yaasir and we will be distributing to all the families in the camps administered by the Mujahideen until we reach everyone affected.'

'Each family has received 25kg of flour, 25kg of sugar, 25kg of rice, 2kg of dates, 3 litres of cooking oil, a carton of therapeutic biscuits, a mosquito net and 20L water cans.'

'The food rations we have provided the families are to last them for about 20 days before we provide them their next ration. This is their right; they are not begging us for food but rather it is an obligation upon us, as Muslims, to help them and to tend to their every need.'

The Drought Relief Team has set up various camps dotted around the major cities and employs hundreds of personnel overseeing the drought relief process across the entire Southern regions of Somalia.

Upon arrival at the camps the families are provided with shelter (tents), blankets, cooking utensils and enough food supplies to sustain them. Free medical assistance is also available to the families and wells are dug up to supply the camps. In the safety of the environment at the camps, thousands of people continue to flock to Aala-Yaasir. In the month of July alone, more than 1500 displaced persons have fled the IDP camps in Mogadishu in order to find tents and provision at Aala-Yaasir.

Since the establishment of the Drought Relief Team in May 2011, more than 150,000 families have been provided with assistance in the camps across the affected regions. The Drought Relief Team has also dug canals and initiated a resettlement program where acres of farmland and food staples are provided to the families returning to their regions.
