HART Rejects Anti-Discrimination Ads

CAIR-Florida's Response to HART's Rejection of the Ad Below

(TAMPA, FL 08/05/2013) In light of HART's rejection of the #MyJihad campaign, officials from CAIR-FL and HART worked together to create a new commercial ad to promote CAIR-FL's multi-cultural staff and civil rights advocacy services. Today's rejection of CAIR-FL's new ad was based on the apparent misconception that CAIR-FL is a religious, rather than a civil rights, non-profit organization. The original purpose of the new ad was to promote the free legal services provided to all members of the community regardless of religion, national origin, race, age, or disability. Likewise, in picturing our staff (only four of whom identify as Muslim), we sought to highlight the diversity we protect on a daily basis. CAIR-FL is appreciative of the commitment to diversity and inclusion shown by Commissioner Beckner, and we will regrettably be exhausting the internal appeal process before legal remedy is sought.

TBO coverage reports that CAIR-FL (not an 'Arab-American' group) submitted three ads in total. We would like to set the record straight and clarify that the first ad that we submitted was the #MyJihad. After it was denied and out of good-will in order to avoid litigation, in an email exchange, CAIR-FL merely suggested a CAIR-Texas ad (see below) as a possible design concept seeking to promote CAIR as an organization who 'Defends Civil Rights in the Community'. This was mistakenly interpreted as an ad submission during a brainstorming session, which we clarified in the email below.
